In 2019, incumbent Democrat Alfonso Lopez defeated a primary challenge from JD Spain, president of the Arlington NAACP chapter. [3] Lopez won the general election with 83% of the vote. [4]
Lopez faces another primary challenge, from preschool teacher Karishma Mehta. [5] Mehta has been endorsed by Democracy for America [6] and Democratic Socialists of America. [7]

In 2017, he was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of which he was then a member.

Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. These will be the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.
