Virginia Paul Holm Bye [1] (March 14, 1902 – October 1968) was a Minnesota politician, a member of the Republican Party, and the first woman to serve as Secretary of State of Minnesota.
Holm was appointed to the position in 1952 by Gov. Elmer Anderson. She succeeded H.H. Chesterman, who had himself previously been appointed to fill the vacancy left by the death of Holm's husband, former Secretary of State Mike Holm.
Holm won election in her own right in November 1952, but lost her bid for re-election in 1954. [2] Her name on the ballot was Mrs. Mike Holm.
The secretary of state of Minnesota is a constitutional officer in the executive branch of government of the U.S. state of Minnesota. Twenty-two individuals have held the office of secretary of state since statehood. The incumbent is Steve Simon, a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
Mike Holm was a Swedish-born American politician and the longest-serving Minnesota Secretary of State, serving from January 4, 1921 until his death. His wife, Virginia Paul Holm, later succeeded him in the office. A resident of Roseau, Minnesota, Holm was a Republican.

Lisa Demuth is an American politician serving since 2019 in the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, Demuth represents District 13A in central Minnesota, which includes the cities of St. Joseph and Cold Spring and parts of Stearns County. She has served since 2023 as leader of the House Republican caucus and from 2023 to 2025 as the minority leader of the House of Representatives. In 2025, Republicans illegally voted for her to be Speaker of the House. Her speakership is not valid, as Democratic Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon, who initially presided over the opening session, declared that the House did not have a quorum during her election as speaker amid a Democratic boycott of the opening session.

Republican nominee and incumbent Acting Secretary of State Virginia Paul Holm defeated Democratic–Farmer–Labor nominee Melvin Cooper in order te serve out the remainder of Virginia Paul Holm's late husband's term. Paul Holm also won a full term to the office that same day against another candidate.
