The Virginia Agricultural Show, or Virginia Show is an annual agricultural fair held in the town of Virginia, County Cavan, Ireland. It is held at the Virginia Show Grounds. The current show has been running for over 80 years. [3] [4] [5] The show is known for its dairy cow competition. The 76th edition was the subject of Show Day a documentary short directed by Alan Bradley in 2018. [6] [7]
Over the years, the event has had exhibitions and cow, sheep, dog and goat competitions, as well as arts, and dancing events. [8] [9] There were 490 competition classes in 2012. [10]
The Irish Champion Cow, known as the "Baileys Irish Champion Cow" for sponsorship reasons, [11] [12] is a dairy cow evaluation competition. [13] [11] Running for more than 30 years, [9] its entrants are judged on aspects such as legs, neck, back and udder qualities. [11] The top prize was worth €8,000 in the mid 2000's, [14] [15] reducing to GBP2,150 in 2016. [16]
As well as an exhibition centre, meeting and sports centre, [17] the Show Grounds is the site of agricultural academic research. [18] It has been used as a temporary COVID-19 testing centre. [19]
County Cavan is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Ulster and is part of the Northern and Western Region. It is named after the town of Cavan and is based on the historic Gaelic territory of East Breffny (Bréifne). Cavan County Council is the local authority for the county, which had a population of 81,704 at the 2022 census.
The Cavan Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association club competition between the top Cavan Gaelic football clubs. It was first competed for in 1888. The winners get the Oliver Plunkett Cup and qualifies to represent their county in the Ulster Club Championship and in turn, go on to the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. Cornafean have won the most titles, having been victorious 20 times. The 2023 Senior football champions are Gowna who beat Kingscourt Stars in the final.
The All-Ireland Junior Football Championship is a GAA competition involving four Junior Gaelic football inter-county teams.
Killeshandra or Killashandra, described as a small town or village and civil parish in County Cavan, Ireland. Killeshandra is located 20 kilometres (12 mi) west of Cavan Town and is recognised as a gateway to the UNESCO Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark region, part of the Erne catchment environment of rivers, lakes, wetlands and woodland. Together with the Lough Oughter Special Protected Area (SPA), it has been recognised by the EU programme for wildlife Natura 2000 since 2010. Killeshandra is noted by Fáilte Ireland as an "Angling Centre of Excellence", and is base for the Killeshandra Camino Calling Walking Festival (www.killeshandracamino.ie) which takes place in June each year. There are several looped walking and cycling trails within Killykeen Forest Park. The town is also home to Killeshandra Gaelic Football Club, known locally as the Killeshandra Leaguers. Rockfield Lake, which is popular with anglers, is a few kilometres southwest of the town. Killeshandra, with its active community has a long record of participation in the National Tidy Towns Ireland competition (www.tidytowns.ie) has won several awards over recent years and is currently third tidiest town or village in County Cavan.
Bovine mastitis is the persistent, inflammatory reaction of the udder tissue due to physical trauma or microorganisms infections. Mastitis, a potentially fatal mammary gland infection, is the most common disease in dairy cattle in the United States and worldwide. It is also the most costly disease to the dairy industry. Milk from cows suffering from mastitis has an increased somatic cell count. Prevention and control of mastitis requires consistency in sanitizing the cow barn facilities, proper milking procedure and segregation of infected animals. Treatment of the disease is carried out by penicillin injection in combination with sulphar drug.
Brookview Tony Charity was a notable show cow who at the height of her career was "considered by many to be the best cow ever to walk the face of the earth.". Today she is still cited as the greatest North American show cow of all time.
The 2001 Irish Masters was a professional invitational snooker tournament which was held at the Citywest Hotel in Saggart, Dublin, from 27 March to 1 April. It was the 24th Irish Masters and the fifth and final World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association invitational event in the 2000–01 snooker season. The tournament was co-sponsored by the Health Promotion Unit and the Office of Tobacco Control of the Department of Health and Children and hotel group Citywest.
