Visual radio is a generic term for adding visuals to audio radio broadcasts. Visual Radio is also a trademark for a Nokia product which delivers interactive FM radio over a data connection.
Visual Radio is a technology developed by Nokia. Visual Radio is built-in functionality available in an increasing number of phones that are already equipped with analog FM radio. [1] [2] [3]
The audio is received via a regular analog FM radio embedded in the phone. A presentation of graphics and text, synchronized to the audio programming, is streamed to the phone over a data connection and the FM transmission chain is unaffected by the addition of Visual Radio.
On phones with built-in Wi-Fi (tested on Nokia E51, E63, E66, E71, N78, N79, N81, N82 a, and N95 8GB), the Nokia application does not allow a Wi-Fi access point to be used for the data connection, only GPRS access points are allowed, allowing the possibility of revenue sharing between Nokia, the Radio stations and GPRS network operators.

The Visual Radio concept was created by Nokia and the platform was originally offered to radio stations and operators globally by HP. Since October 2007, Nokia has been collaborating with RCS Inc., of New York, whose Selector music scheduling system is used by thousands of radio stations around the world. RCS produces the second-generation version of the Visual Radio platform and also markets a similar product for the Internet (and most other digital platforms) under the RCS RadioShow brand.
The interactive visual channel is produced by the radio station. Interactivity options include quizzes, messaging, content download, commerce, etc.
Kiss FM (Finland) (now defunct) was the first radio station that started using Visual Radio. [4] Other stations supporting Visual Radio included the UK's GWR Bristol, GWR Bath, Virgin Radio (now Absolute Radio), The Voice in Helsinki, Mediacorp stations in Singapore, Radio Mirchi station in New Delhi India, and Los 40 Principales in Spain. RAI has done test transmissions with Visual radio in some selected areas. [5] In Belgium Radio Contact Radio Contact Vision) and Q-music support Visual Radio as a TVTV statio not and they also transmit Visual Radio on the internet.
Nokia is making the Visual Radio client available to users of other phones, and has announced that they are producing a Java applet to enable this.

In November 2005, Spodtronic began producing a visual radio service in Germany.
Their version of visual radio uses radio streaming over UMTS, with associated graphics and text sent down the same UMTS connection. A client is available for a user to download and install into their Nokia (series 60) mobile phone.
This product requires no extra infrastructure at the radio station since it works by using the metatags already present in the internet stream.
Visual radio applications are also possible over DAB Digital Radio. Using a technique called MOT Slideshow, visuals can be broadcast within the same data spectrum as the audio. Slideshow-enabled stations are already operating in some parts of the world, including Singapore, where they market this as visual radio.
RadioVIS utilises the RadioDNS framework which provides a method to translate the broadcast parameters to an IP-based resource. The visuals which accompany the radio service are delivered independently over IP.
BORA or Korean : 보이는 라디오 is an internet radio service in South Korea and the Philippines. the service enables the listener to not only listen to the radio program but also see the DJs's of the radio program and if possible, even the guests of the show. the BORA streams can be accessed via the station's internet radio app or via a web browser. the stations that do this are: in the Philippines Magic 89.9, DWRX and ABS-CBN , and in Korea HLKV-AM, HLKV-FM, HLSQ-FM, HLSQ, Gyeonggi FM and Sunny FM which requires login and/or download the station's internet radio app meanwhile the Korean Broadcasting System's Popular music station KBS Cool FM's BORA stream can be accessible by both registered and non-registered KBS website users via this link.
Radio on Television, also known as TeleRadyo, is a format used by radio stations in the Philippines, mostly those which air a news and talk format. ABS-CBN introduced this format with the launch of DZMM TeleRadyo (now TeleRadyo Serbisyo) in 2007. [6] Other stations, especially those on the FM band, would follow suit. Other channels include DZRH News Television (DZRH 666), Aliw Channel 23 (DWIZ 882), Radyo Bandido TV (DZRJ 810), Inquirer 990 Television (Radyo Inquirer 990AM), DZME TeleRadyo (DZME 1530) and K-Lite Radio TV (103.5 K-Lite).
The Nokia 6230 is a mobile phone based on the Nokia Series 40 platform. It was announced on 28 October 2003 and released in February 2004.
Series 40, often shortened as S40, is a software platform and application user interface (UI) software on Nokia's broad range of mid-tier feature phones, as well as on some of the Vertu line of luxury phones. It was one of the world's most widely used mobile phone platforms and found in hundreds of millions of devices. Nokia announced on 25 January 2012 that the company has sold over 1.5 billion Series 40 devices. It was not used for smartphones, with Nokia turning first to Symbian, then in 2012–2017 to Windows Phone, and most recently Android. However, in 2012 and 2013, several Series 40 phones from the Asha line, such as the 308, 309 and 311, were advertised as "smartphones" although they do not actually support smartphone features like multitasking or a fully fledged HTML browser.
DZMMRadyo Patrol was a commercial news/talk radio station broadcasting from Quezon City, Philippines, serving the Mega Manila market. It was the flagship station of the Radyo Patrol Network owned by ABS-CBN Corporation. The station's studio was located at the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center, Sgt. Esguerra Avenue, corner of Mother Ignacia St., Brgy. South Triangle, Diliman, Quezon City; its 50,000-watt transmitter was located at F. Navarette St., Brgy. Panghulo, Obando, Bulacan.
The Nokia N79 is a Symbian OS v9.3 smartphone and a member of the Nokia Nseries multimedia smartphone family running on S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. It was officially announced by Nokia on 26 August 2008. The N79 is an advanced device with a 5 megapixel camera, dual LED flash, and GPS, with many improvements over the Nokia N78. It retailed for 350 euros upon release in October 2008.
The Nokia N82 is a high-end smartphone produced by Nokia, and announced on 14 November 2007 as part of the company's Nseries line. The N82 runs Symbian OS v9.2. The N82 inherits much of the Nokia N95's features and specifications, with the major addition being its xenon flash. At the time the N82 was considered one of the most sophisticated camera phone on the market. It is also considered a successor to the Nokia N95, preceding the Nokia N96.
Nokia 5300 XpressMusic is a slider mobile phone by Nokia, part of the XpressMusic range. It was introduced on 26 September 2006 and released at the end of that year. It runs on Nokia Series 40 3rd Edition FP2.
Nokia 6220 classic is a Symbian OS smartphone announced by Nokia on 11 February 2008. It is notable for featuring a Xenon flash for its 5-megapixel camera, similar to Nokia N82 and often considered as a "budget" version of the N82. Despite its compact size, it offers features comparable to the Nseries lineup, though it lacks Wi-Fi and a 3.5 mm audio jack, probably to cut design and production costs.
The Nokia N78 is a 3G smartphone made by Nokia. It was first introduced at the Mobile World Congress on 11 February 2008, and was launched on 26 May 2008 for €350 before taxes and subsidies. It runs on Symbian 9.3 and was marketed as a more cheaper Nseries device inside a compact, light body. The phone is compatible with the N-Gage 2.0 mobile gaming service.
The N-Gage service was a mobile gaming platform from Nokia that was available for several Nokia smartphones running on S60 (Symbian). N-Gage combined numerous games with 3D graphics into an application featuring online and social features. The service was a successor to the original 2003 N-Gage gaming device.
The Nokia E71 is a smartphone introduced in May 2008 from the Eseries range with a QWERTY keyboard targeting business users worldwide. It runs on Symbian OS v9.2, with a Series 60 3rd Edition, second generation Feature Pack 1. The Nokia E71 succeeded the Nokia E61/61i models, building on the base design and form factor but enhancing on the feature set.

The Nokia Nseries was a high-end lineup of feature phones, smartphones, and tablets marketed by Nokia Corporation from 2005 to 2011. Digital multimedia services, such as music playback, photo/video capture or viewing, gaming or internet services were the central focus of the lineup. Despite the similar name and user interface, S30+ is technically completely different and unrelated to S30.
