Radio Mirchi is a nationwide network of private FM radio stations in India. It is owned by the EntertainmentNetwork India Ltd (ENIL), which is one of the subsidiaries of The Times Group. mirchi is Hindi for Red Chilli. The tagline of Radio Mirchi is "Mirchi Sunnewaale Always Khush!" [1]

The Times Group mass media conglomerate in India

Bennett Coleman and Company Limited, commonly known as The Times Group, is India’s largest media conglomerate, according to Financial Times as of March 2015. The Audit Bureau of Circulations reported in May 2014 that the Times of India had the largest circulation of any English-language newspaper in the world, with 3,321,702 average qualifying sales. The company remains a family-owned business as the descendants of Sahu Jain own a majority stake in The Times Group. The Times Group has over 11,000 employees and revenue exceeding $1.5 billion.

Hindi An official language of India

Hindi, or Modern Standard Hindi is a standardised and Sanskritised register of the Hindustani language. Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, is one of the official languages of India, along with the English language. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Republic of India. However, it is not the national language of India because no language was given such a status in the Indian constitution.

Radio Mirchi maintains weekly music charts (or record charts) for India. The most followed charts are Mirchi Top 20 (Bollywood Songs) and Angrezi Top 20 (English Songs). Both of these charts are a ranking of recorded music according to popularity. These charts are published on a weekly basis in the Indian English-language daily newspaper, The Times of India, and on Radio Mirchi's official website.

The Times of India (TOI) is an Indian English-language daily newspaper owned by The Times Group It is the third-largest newspaper in India by circulation and largest selling English-language daily in the world according to Audit Bureau of Circulations (India). It is the oldest English-language newspaper in India still in circulation, albeit under different names since its first edition published in 1838. It is also the second-oldest Indian newspaper still in circulation after the Bombay Samachar.

Mirchi has its stations in India and also in UAE. Some of these stations run 24x7.

As per the latest IRS data released in 2017, Radio Mirchi has emerged as the number one FM broadcaster in Delhi and Mumbai, as well as in the top 8 metros taken together.

History

The original avatar of Radio Mirchi was Times FM. Radio Mirchi began operations in 2001 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Until 1993, All India Radio or AIR, a government undertaking, was the only radio broadcaster in India. The government then took the initiative to privatize the radio broadcasting sector. It sold airtime blocks on its FM channels in Indore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Varanasi, Visakhapatnam and Goa to private operators, who developed their own program content. The Times Group operated its brand, Times FM, till June 1998. After that, the government decided not to renew contracts given to private operators.

Indore is the most populous and the largest city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It serves as the headquarters of both Indore District and Indore Division. It is also considered as an education hub of the state and first city to have campuses of both the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management. Located on the southern edge of Malwa Plateau, at an average altitude of 550 meters (1,800 ft) above sea level, it has the highest elevation among major cities of Central India. It comes under Tier 2 cities in India.

All India Radio (AIR), officially known since 1956 as Ākāsha Vāṇī is the national public radio broadcaster of India and is a division of Prasar Bharati. It was established in 1930. It is the sister service of Prasar Bharati's Doordarshan, an Indian television broadcaster. Headquartered in the Akashvani Bhavan building in New Delhi, it houses the Drama Section, the FM Section, the National Service, and is also home to the Indian television station Doordarshan Kendra, (Delhi).

First round of licenses

In 2000, the government announced the auction of 108 FM frequencies across India. ENIL won the largest number of frequencies, and thus started its operations under the brand name Radio Mirchi.IT'S HOT

Second round of licences

In January 2006, Radio Mirchi purchased 25 frequencies in the second wave of licences that were issued by the Government of India. This pushes the Radio Mirchi presence in 32 centres. In the first wave of launches, Indore was the first city in India having grade of first private radio channel.Times decided to start radio channel to address the mass audience as advertisers can be attracted by showing a low cost per thousand.

Third round of licenses

Radio Mirchi invested above Rs.339 crore during phase III auctions and purchased 17 new channels in new cities such as Chandigarh, Kochi, Kozhikode, Jammu, Srinagar, Guwahati and Shillong, as well as in existing cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur and Surat. This pushes Radio Mirchi presence in 49 centres. [2]

Global expansion

Radio Mirchi started operations across UAE, streaming across three frequencies : 97.3FM in Abu Dhabi, 88.8FM in Dubai and the Northern Emirates and 95.6FM in Al Ain & Bahrain 104.2. All the RJs have been recruited from various Radio Mirchi stations in India including Anup Chugh, with a total seven who will take to the air. [3]

It reaches out to almost 52% of FM radio listeners in Delhi, 44% in Mumbai,40% in Indore,35% in Jaipur,30% in Bhopal, 20% Chennai, 27% in Kolkata, 15% in Nagpur 60% in Mangaluru and 12% in Bengaluru. Radio Mirchi has started providing Visual Radio to its subscribers in Delhi from 25 July 2006 onwards and in Mumbai from September 2006. It also has started its Visual Radio service from Kolkata recently.

According to the Radio Audience Measurement Reports (RAM), Radio Mirchi has been dominating in Delhi & is the leader in Mumbai and Kolkata. However, in Kolkata they are not clear leaders in SEC ABC segments. The SEC ABC segments were earlier dominated by Big FM & now by Friends FM. However, in the SEC D & E segments Radio Mirchi has total domination

Radio Mirchi is operated by Abu Dhabi Media in partnership with ENIL.

USA

Stations are operated under a brand licensing agreement between ENIL and Arohi Media, with the latter managing and operating the stations. Radio Mirchi went live in the USA on January 26, 2019.

The Mirchi Music Awards are annually given awards instituted by Radio Mirchi for excellence in Bollywood film music. It was first given in 2008.

Radio City (Indian radio station) Indian radio station

Radio City is India's first private FM radio station and was started on 3 July 2001. Radio City is owned by Music Broadcast Private Limited (MBPL) which is a subsidiary of Jagran Prakashan Ltd. It broadcasts on 91.1 megahertz from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow and New Delhi. It plays Hindi, English and regional songs. It was launched in Hyderabad in March 2006, in Chennai on 7 July 2006 and in Visakhapatnam October 2007. Radio City recently forayed into New Media in May 2008 with the launch of a music portal - PlanetRadiocity.com now radiocity.in that offers entertainment related news, videos, songs, podcasts and other music-related features. The Radio station currently plays a mix of Hindi and Regional music. In 2010, Radio City launched its first internet radio station Radio City Fun Ka Antenna and now they have 52 online radio stations.

Hathway Cable & Datacom Ltd, initially known as BITV Cable Networks, is a cable television service operator in India based in Mumbai. It was acquired by Hathway Investments Pvt Ltd in 1999. In June 1993 Business India Television (BITV) Cable Networks Pvt Ltd acquired and operated cable networks in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Indore, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad under the leadership of Pheroza Billimoria and Roopesh Rao. It has large operations in many cities, including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Indore and in 2013 Kolkata. It has diversified into providing Internet access via cable and was one of the first to do so in Chennai in 1999–2000. In India, it was the first company to provide Internet using the CATV network. Hathway Broadband Internet was the first cable ISP in India. The company has a 51 percent stake in Divya Bhasker's Bhasker Multinet and in Gujarat Telelinks P L. The FM broadcasting in India began in 1977, but boomed after 2001 when the privatisation of FM broadcasting began. As of December 2018, there are more than 369 operational private radio stations in more than 101 cities and towns across India. The Government of India-owned All India Radio has about 450 FM stations covering 39% of the area and 52% of the population of India.

BIG FM 92.7 Indias largest and no 1 radio network

92.7 BIG FM is a nationwide private FM radio station in India owned by Indian businessman Anil Ambani. Big FM launched its first station in September 2006. It broadcasts at 92.7 MHz. It mainly plays Bollywood music but Hollywood and regional songs are also played. It broadcasts from 6am to 12am.

Ishq FM

Ishq FM, branded as Ishq 104.8 FM, is a romantic music FM Radio Channel in India that broadcasts in the major cities: Delhi, Mumbai, & Kolkata. It was initially launched as Meow FM, which was a talk-based channel and served Delhi, Indore, Mumbai and Kolkata. It is an India Today Group venture and its format was directed at a female audience. The channel got noticed for its catchy advertisement on BEST buses. It had also introduced "Meri Meow", a social network for its fans. In September 2010 the channel had changed its name to OYE-FM and programming to a Filmi format. In December 2016 it rechristened to the current avatar of ISHQ 104.8 FM.
