Vivian Irish is an American evolutionary biologist. She is currently Chair & Eaton Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University. [1] Her research focuses on floral development. [2] She was president of Society for Developmental Biology in 2012 [3] and currently serves as an editor for the journals Developmental Biology and Evolution & Development. [4]
Irish was drawn into research from a young age when visiting the Boston Science Museum. [5] She has taught numerous undergraduate students at Yale University and focused on the importance of evidence-based thinking. She began working with Arabidopsis as it was becoming a model organism, serving as a "botanical Drosophila ".
Irish received a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University while mentored by Bill Gelbart. Her first postdoctoral fellowship was at Cambridge University, where she studied Drosophila with Michael Akam and her second postdoctoral fellowship focused on plant development with Ian Sussex at Yale. Irish has been a faculty member at Yale since 1991. [1] In her present position as chair of the Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology department, she helped to create a degree path for a Neuroscience major in collaboration with Yale's Psychology Department. [7] The Irish lab does work on plant development and stem cell proliferation in plants, particularly as it pertains to the formation and growth of a flower's petal. [4] This has also included research into the morphogenesis of thorns in Citrus, which was found to be related to the rest of lateral stem cells. [8]
Her work has been influential in the development of the ABC model of development, specifically with the genes APETALA1, APETALA3, and PISTILLA MADS-box genes. [9] Irish is generally interested in patterns and timing of development, which she has explored through fate maps and gene expression [10]

The ABC model of flower development is a scientific model of the process by which flowering plants produce a pattern of gene expression in meristems that leads to the appearance of an organ oriented towards sexual reproduction, a flower. There are three physiological developments that must occur in order for this to take place: firstly, the plant must pass from sexual immaturity into a sexually mature state ; secondly, the transformation of the apical meristem's function from a vegetative meristem into a floral meristem or inflorescence; and finally the growth of the flower's individual organs. The latter phase has been modelled using the ABC model, which aims to describe the biological basis of the process from the perspective of molecular and developmental genetics.

Utpal Banerjee is a distinguished professor of the department of molecular, cell and developmental biology at UCLA. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, India and obtained his Master of Science degree in physical chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. In 1984, he obtained a PhD in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology where he was also a postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Seymour Benzer from 1984-1988.
Staufen is a protein product of a maternally expressed gene first identified in Drosophila melanogaster. The protein has been implicated in helping regulate genes important in determination of gradients that set up the anterior posterior axis such as bicoid and oskar. Staufen proteins, abbreviated Stau, are necessary for cell localization during the oogenesis and zygotic development. It is involved in targeting of the messenger RNA encoding these genes to the correct pole of the egg cell.

Chris Q Doe is a professor of Biology, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at the Institute for Neuroscience, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon. Doe did his PhD work with Corey Goodman at Stanford University, followed by postdoctoral fellowship with Matthew P. Scott at University of Colorado Boulder. He is a researcher in developmental biology known for his studies on neurogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster neural stem cell neuroblasts. His lab investigates the generation of neuronal diversity and neural circuit formation in Drosophila melanogaster. Doe is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Professor Maneesha Inamdar is a stem cell and developmental biologist conducting research at Bangalore, India. She is presently Director of inStem, India’s first stem cell institute. She is on deputation from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore. She is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy and a J C Bose National Fellow.
Dr. Beronda Montgomery is a writer, science communicator, and researcher. In 2022, she moved to Grinnell College as professor of biology and vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. Prior to Grinnell, Montgomery served as Michigan State University Foundation Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics. She was also a member of the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory. Her research group investigates how photosynthetic organisms adapt to changes in their environment. Her scholarship extends beyond biology and into studying mentorship and faculty development to develop evidence-based strategies to foster equity and inclusion in academia. Jyotsna Dhawan is an Indian Cell and Developmental Biologist, Emeritus Scientist at Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology and Visiting Professor, Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (inStem). Dhawan's research has focused on adult stem cell function and skeletal muscle regeneration. Dhawan is the current (2019-2021) President of the Indian Society for Cell Biology and the Indian Society of Developmental Biologists (2017-2020). Dhawan was elected as a fellow to the Indian National Science Academy in 2019.
