Vodka Collins was a Tokyo-based Japanese-American rock band, formed in 1971. The core band members were drummer Hiroshi Oguchi (formerly of The Tempters), [1] singer-guitarist Alan Merrill, [2] singer-guitarist Hiroshi "Monsieur" Kamayatsu (formerly of The Spiders) [3] and bassist Take Yokouchi (formerly of the Four Leaves touring band, High Society). [4] In later reunion recordings in the 1990s, Yokouchi was replaced by Masayoshi "Mabo" Kabe (formerly of The Golden Cups) on bass guitar. [5]

Most of the band's released works were original compositions by the lead singer Alan Merrill. The band recorded four albums, [6] the most well known being the glam rock Tokyo – New York , released in 1973 on Toshiba EMI Records. Other album titles are Chemical Reaction, [7] Pink Soup [8] ', Boy's Life [9] and greatest hits compilation Boys In The Band. [10] The band's most notable contribution was recording and releasing one of the first singles in the glam rock genre in Japanese, 1973's double A-sided single "Sands Of Time" and "Automatic Pilot" on Toshiba Express records. [11]

Vodka Collins were the opening act on the Jackson 5's first show in Japan on April 27, 1973 at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo. The show was broadcast live on Fuji Television. [12]

The band's founding member and drummer Hiroshi Oguchi died January 25, 2009. [13] A memorial concert was given for him by all surviving band members on January 25, 2010 at the Duo Exchange in Tokyo, with Grico Tomioka taking Oguchi's place on drums. The band's rhythm guitarist, Monsieur Kamayatsu, died on March 1, 2017. [14] Lead singer Alan Merrill hosted a memorial concert for Kamayatsu with star guests in Tokyo in April 2017 at the Duo Music Exchange. [15] Merrill and Kabe both died in 2020.

Alan Merrill was an American vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. In the early 1970s, he was one of the few resident foreigners to achieve pop star status in Japan. He was the writer of, and lead singer on, the first released version of the song "I Love Rock 'n' Roll", which was recorded by his band the Arrows in 1975. The song became a breakthrough hit for Joan Jett in 1982.

Masayoshi Kabe often known by his stage name Louise Louis, was a half-French and half-Japanese bassist and guitarist from Yokohama, Japan. He began his career in 1966 as a member of The Golden Cups. He was a studio musician throughout the 1970s and also a member of various bands such as Speed, Glue & Shinki until he permanently joined the supergroup Pink Cloud in 1978. After they disbanded in 1994 he formed the instrumental side-project ZZK while providing support to other musicians as a bassist. He also recorded four albums as bass player with the band Vodka Collins from 1995 to 1998. He died on 26 September 2020, of multiple organ failure.

Hiroshi "Monsieur" Kamayatsu was a Japanese singer and guitarist born in Tokyo.

Take Yokouchi, born 22 February 1954 in Tokyo, is a musician best known for his work with the Japanese glam rock band Vodka Collins. Take was originally a live touring guitar player for the popular teen idol band The Four Leaves.When he was approached to join the new band Vodka Collins in 1971, it was on bass guitar, and a job he took gladly. Take Yokouchi played bass on the 1973 Vodka Collins singles "Sands Of Time" and "Automatic Pilot", and the "Tokyo - New York" album released on EMI-Toshiba in 1973.

Tetsu Yamauchi is a Japanese retired bass guitarist. In the 1970s, he was a member of several popular hard rock bands, including Free, where he replaced former bassist Andy Fraser before the band's final album Heartbreaker, and the Faces, where he replaced Ronnie Lane and appears on the band's final single, "You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything", as well as touring with them and playing on the live album Coast to Coast: Overture and Beginners. He also recorded a number of solo albums and did extensive work as a session musician before retiring from the music industry in the late 1990s.
