Volkstheater is a station on U3 and U2 of the Vienna U-Bahn. [1] It is located in the Innere Stadt District. It opened in 1980.

Contents

The U2 part of the station was closed between 2020 and late 2024 to install platform screen doors. It is expected to be overtaken by the new U5 line soon.

The Volkstheater in Vienna was founded in 1889 by request of the citizens of Vienna, amongst them the dramatist Ludwig Anzengruber and the furniture manufacturer Thonet, in order to offer a popular counter weight to the Hofburgtheater. It was erected according to designs by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, who attempted to reconcile their plans with historicism. It is located in Neubau, the seventh district of Vienna.

The Vienna pre-metro tramway system was built on separated sections in the 1960s. The underground sections are called Untergrundstrassenbahn or sometimes abbreviated U-Strassenbahn, USTRAB or USTRABA . The pre-metro tunnels are maintained and used by the Wiener Linien, operator of the tramway lines. One section is used as well by the Wiener Lokalbahnen (WLB), the operator of a regional tram-train service.
