Competition

There are 12 clubs in the WRU League 2 West. During the course of a season (which lasts from September to May) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents for a total of 22 games for each club, with a total of 132 games in each season. Teams receive four points for a win and two point for a draw, an additional bonus point is awarded to either team if they score four tries or more in a single match. No points are awarded for a loss though the losing team can gain a bonus point for finishing the match within seven points of the winning team. Teams are ranked by total points, then the number of tries scored and then points difference. At the end of each season, the club with the most points is crowned as champion. If points are equal the tries scored then points difference determines the winner. The team who is declared champion at the end of the season is eligible for promotion to the WRU League 1 West. The two lowest placed teams are relegated into the WRU Division Three West or WRU Division Three South West depending on geographical location. [1]

Sponsorship

In 2008 the Welsh Rugby Union announced a new sponsorship deal for the club rugby leagues with SWALEC valued at £1 million (GBP). [2] The initial three year sponsorship was extended at the end of the 2010/11 season, making SWALEC the league sponsors until 2015. [3] The leagues sponsored are the WRU Divisions one through to seven.

The confidence after promotion the previous season ensured a good start at a higher level, all six matches in September 1999 being victories. First defeat of the season was at home to Birchgrove who were to finish in 2nd place and promoted. Notable results and performances were regular, including the only home defeat over eventual champions Trimsaran 30-19, away victories at Haverfordwest 23-17, Mumbles 21-11 and Newcastle Emlyn 17-12. Big wins were against Aberystwyth 51-8, Kidwelly 33-15, Gowerton 60-12, Tumble 31-15 and Mumbles at home in the last game of the season with a highly entertaining 43-32. Ominously however at the latter end of the league campaign were comprehensive losses at Aberystwyth 5-46, 15-29 at Brynamman and Kidwelly 19-62. The ‘rich’ West Wales Cup results of recent seasons continued with wins at Ammanford 45-15 and an impressive 19-10 beating of Division two Bonymaen. Unfortunately the Semi-Final draw was again versus First Division Dunvant which was scratched. Players who had advanced their careers with other sides largely returned and Captain was Stephen Munkley. Top points scorer was Michael Morgan with 128 and Damian James scored a maximum 13 tries. Arwel Williams won both the Players Player and Supporters Player of the year awards. Impressively 49 players, all from Ystalyfera, appeared for the team in this season, a fact much envied by other teams at this level of the National League.

The season started with a change of coach and a change of captain. Appointed vice captain was Mathew Scott. A level of ‘expectancy’ thus ensued and with a start of two competitive friendlies both at home, the league began in earnest with a traditionally unlucky fixture for the ‘Fera away at Cwmavon. Past history meant for nothing however and a well organised and structured performance ended in a fine 29–19 win. A repeat showing a week later at home to Brynamman and a 26–6 win, led to a position of a little over-confidence, ‘Fera narrowly exiting the Swansea Valley Cup in the 1st Round three days later away to Morriston. Back on track with a determined and physical victory at Bryncoch 25–15, the next home game was again against a traditional ‘bogey’ side Kenfig Hill. This was a typical ‘old style’ West Wales affair with yellow and red cards for both sides, Ystalyfera losing 11–29 after keeping in touch with the visitors for a greater part of the game. A return to Morriston for a league fixture saw a much better controlled performance with a 20–15 win, and a further win at Pencoed made it four continuous league away victories. The Pencoed win was the first in the season where Ystalyfera out-played their opponents in every area of the game, the hosts being unable to seek any avenue to secure a fight back. This repeated itself against Nantyffyllon home and self-confidence was building amongst the side. Then came Aberavon Green Stars away. In this game and in the subsequent losses home to Glynneath and away at Seven Sisters, the effort put in by individual players was noticeable, but the co-ordinated team tactics were missing and a struggle against well organised opponents ensued.

Having finished the season before with the glory of winning the West Wales Bowl for the first time, expectancy was high at the start of the new 2011-12 Ystalyfera Rugby Football Club season.
