The hotel opened in 2009 and was designed by Arquitectonica, a Miami-based international architecture, interior design, and urban planning company. [5] In 2011, the Viceroy was bought by Pebblebrook Hotel Trust for $36.5 million. [6]

On June 1, 2016, Al Rayyan Tourism Investment Company (ARTIC), a subsidiary of the Qatar-based Al Faisal Holding Company, announced its acquisition of the Viceroy Miami hotel and the subsequent rebranding of the property into a W hotel. [9] The acquisition cost $64.5 million and led to the cessation of Viceroy's management of the hotel as Starwood took over management. [10]
The acquisition of Viceroy Miami was ARTIC's fifth investment in the U.S. and the second in Miami, following the $213 million acquisition of St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort in 2014. [11] [12] ARTIC's U.S. hospitality portfolio includes the Radisson Blu hotel in Chicago, the St. Regis Washington D.C., the Manhattan Times Square in New York, and the St. Regis Bal Harbour Hotel in Miami. [13] The W Miami is the third W hotel in South Florida, in addition to W South Beach and W Fort Lauderdale. [14] [15]
Before the 2016 ARTIC acquisition, Viceroy Miami was mentioned as one of USA Today's "10 Best" 2015 Best Hotel Rooftop Bars. [16] ARTIC also stated that Viceroy Miami had previously been awarded Conde Nast Traveler's Top Hotels in Florida in 2013 and 2015. [17]

The Icon Brickell complex is an urban development center in Miami, Florida, United States. It is located on the south side of the Miami River in Downtown's northern Brickell Financial District. The complex consists of three skyscrapers and the Icon Brickell Plaza, connecting the towers at their base. The first two towers, the Icon Brickell North Tower and Icon Brickell South Tower, are twin buildings. Each one is 586 feet (179 m) tall with 58 floors. The third phase of the complex is the W Hotel Tower, which is 500 feet (150 m) tall with 50 floors. The complex is on the east side of Brickell Avenue between Southeast 5th and 6th Streets. The architectural firm Arquitectonica worked on the project, while the design was done by Philippe Starck and John Hitchcox's design company. While architecturally stunning, several local residents consider The Icon to “have a bad vibe” and even use words like “demonic” to describe it. Perhaps that’s the gloomy-chic style of the lobby, the yellow of tower 2 which seems to offend some, or the crowd at tower 3 which includes airbnb guests and W hotel guests, which can often include, as some guests have suggested, “druggies”, “only fans girls”, “escorts”, and a “weird crowd.” There seems to be a ‘love it or hate it’ reaction to the vibe and the architecture, with fans saying the ocean views out the floor to ceiling windows of residences are the best in the neighborhood. It’s universally agreed the amenities are top notch.
