Au Train Township is a civil township of Alger County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 1,138.
Munising is a city on the southern shore of Lake Superior on the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,355 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alger County. The city is adjacent to the northwest corner of Munising Township, but is administratively autonomous.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a U.S. National Lakeshore on the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It extends for 42 miles (67 km) along the shore and covers 73,236 acres. The park has extensive views of the hilly shoreline between Munising and Grand Marais in Alger County, Michigan, with picturesque rock formations, waterfalls, and sand dunes.
M-28 is an east–west state trunkline highway that traverses nearly all of the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan, from Wakefield to near Sault Ste. Marie in Bruce Township. Along with US Highway 2 (US 2), M-28 forms a pair of primary highways linking the Upper Peninsula from end to end, providing a major access route for traffic from Michigan and Canada along the southern shore of Lake Superior. M-28 is the longest state trunkline in Michigan numbered with the "M-" prefix at 290.373 miles (467.310 km). The entire highway is listed on the National Highway System, while three sections of M-28 are part of the Lake Superior Circle Tour. M-28 also carries two memorial highway designations along its route.
H-13 is a county-designated highway in the Upper Peninsula of the US state of Michigan that runs north–south for approximately 36.2 miles (58.3 km) between Nahma Junction in Delta County and the Munising area in Alger County. The highway is also signed as Federal Forest Highway 13 (FFH-13), a Federal Forest Highway between Nahma Junction and Wetmore. The roadway runs through rural national forest lands providing access to several campgrounds and parks. The area contains several lakes as well. The Forest Highway System dates back to the 1920s, and an earthen roadway was present along the route of FFH-13 by the 1930s. It was paved by the late 1940s and added to the county-designated highway system in the 1970s. A section of H-13 in Alger County originally continued north to Miners Castle, but the roadway designation was truncated in the first decade of the 21st century.
Bond Falls is a waterfall on the middle branch of the Ontonagon River, a few miles east of Paulding in Haight Township in southern Ontonagon County, Michigan. The site is near U.S. Highway 45 in the western portion of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The waterfalls are listed by the state of Michigan as the Bond Falls Scenic Site.
The Anna River is a 7.1-mile-long (11.4 km) river on the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The mouth of the river is at 46°24′40″N86°38′26″W in the city of Munising on the South Bay of Grand Island Harbor on Lake Superior.
M-94 is a state trunkline in the Upper Peninsula of the US state of Michigan. It runs for 86.983 miles (139.986 km) from K. I. Sawyer to Manistique. The highway is part of the Lake Superior Circle Tour during a concurrency with M-28. M-94 crosses the Siphon Bridge in Manistique, unique for the fact that the bridge roadway is below water level.
H-58 is a county-designated highway in the US state of Michigan that runs east–west for approximately 69 miles (111 km) between the communities of Munising and Deer Park in the Upper Peninsula. The western section is routed through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, along the southern shore of Lake Superior, and the adjacent Lake Superior State Forest in Alger County while connecting Munising to the communities of Van Meer and Melstrand. At Grand Marais, H-58 exits the national lakeshore area and runs through town. The segment running east of Grand Marais to Deer Park in Luce County is a gravel road that connects to H-37 in Muskallonge Lake State Park.
Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park is a waterfall and state park located in Onota Township and Rock River Township, in far western Alger County, Michigan. The waterfall is in the southern part of the site, in Rock River Township, 8 miles (13 km) south of Lake Superior near M-94.
Sable Falls is a waterfall located on Sable Creek in the easternmost portion of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Alger County, Michigan. The main access road to the falls is H-58 west of Grand Marais, Michigan. The falls tumbles 75 feet over Munising and Jacobsville sandstone formations. The waterfall is approximately one-half mile from Lake Superior. Stairs allow for relatively easy access to the falls. Between 2007 and 2010, the park service extended the boardwalk along the falls to include a portion of Sable Creek downstream from the major (upper) falls to allow visitors to take in the minor (lower) falls and rapids downstream. There is no handicap accessibility to the site.
Munising Falls is a waterfall located in Munising in the westernmost portion of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Alger County. The falls drops about 50 feet (15 m) over a sandstone cliff. With the exception of the spring thaw, the amount of water falling is relatively small. There are trails leading to multiple viewpoints around the falls.
The Munising Rear Range Light works with the Munising Front Range Light to project a line of light out into Lake Superior in order to guide boats from the open lake into the safe harbor at Munising, Michigan. This harbor is a natural bay and sheltered on the north by Grand Island. Grand Island however provides a serious navigation hazard, and as boats navigate in the East Channel, there are several dangerous rock ledges that will sink the unwary captain. This pair of range lights replaced the ineffective Grand Island East Channel Light in 1905. The history of these lighthouses is documented by Terry Pepper and is not reproduced here.
The Munising Front Range Light and its matching Munising Rear Range Light replaced the ineffective Grand Island East Channel Light in 1905. These two lights combine to guide boats from the open waters of Lake Superior down the East Channel next to Grand Island into the harbor of Munising. The Rock River Canyon Wilderness is a 4,640-acre (18.8 km2) unit within the Hiawatha National Forest. It is located in Alger County, Michigan. The wilderness is accessible from M-94, which runs south of the unit in a west-to-east direction. The nearest town is Chatham, Michigan, which is located approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) south of the wilderness unit's eastern end.
Alger Falls is a waterfall located along highway M-28 in Alger County, Michigan near Munising at the junction with M-94. The falls consist of a series of drops, the highest of which is about 15 feet (4.6 m). The falls can be seen from the highway. The level of water coming over the falls can vary greatly depending on snow melt or rainfall.
Tannery Falls is a waterfall on Tannery Creek located near the city of Munising, Michigan. The Falls are also sometimes called the Rudy M. Olson Memorial Falls. The grave site of Rudolf Olsen can be seen on the path leading to the falls alongside a set of stairs. Tannery Creek flows behind a small residential area before reaching The falls which drop 40 feet (12 m) into an impressive sandstone canyon. There is a cave behind the falls. The level of water coming over the falls can vary greatly depending on snow melt or rainfall. Tannery Falls is one of the less-advertised and less-maintained falls in the area. For a number of years, the falls were under private ownership. The land around the area was purchased by the Michigan Nature Association which created a public nature preserve that includes the nearby Memorial Falls.
Memorial Falls are actually two similar waterfalls in adjacent gorges on small streams near the city of Munising Michigan. The larger falls drop approximately 40 feet. There is a cave behind both falls. There is a small natural arch in the sandstone between the two gorges near the top of the falls. The level of water coming over the falls can vary greatly depending on snow melt or rainfall and the smaller of the two falls are often dry. Memorial Falls are two of the less-advertised and less-maintained falls in the area and are accessed via a trail from a residential street above the falls. An additional trail leads to the bottom of the falls. The falls belong to the Michigan Nature Association. They are very close to Tannery Falls.
Bridalveil Falls is a seasonal waterfall located at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan. Directions: From H-58 from Munising go east 4.5 miles (7.2 km) to Miners Castle Road, then 5 miles (8.0 km) to the Castle. You can see this from afar from here. You can also see it from the Lake in a boat, or hiking on the Lakeshore Trail
