Wallace P. Carson Jr. (born June 10,1934) is an American attorney and politician from Oregon. He has spent time in both of Oregon's legislative branches and served on the Oregon Supreme Court for 24 years. Carson's fourteen-year tenure as chief justice was longer than that of any of his predecessors. [1]
Wallace P. Carson Jr. was born June 10,1934; [2] he was raised in Salem,where his grandfather had started a law firm in 1889. [3] He graduated from Salem High School (now North Salem High School) in 1952. [4] Wallace graduated from Stanford University in Palo Alto,California with a Bachelor of Arts in 1956 where he was a brother of Phi Delta Theta. [3] At Stanford he was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC),which led to a commission in the United States Air Force. Carson Jr. then enrolled in Willamette University's law school,graduating with his Juris Doctor in 1962. [5]
After graduation,he spent three years on active duty in the Air Force. Overall Carson Jr. was in the armed forces for 34 years,many with the Air Force Reserve and Oregon Air National Guard. While serving in the military he rose to the rank of brigadier general while serving as a Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) officer,ground control intercept officer,and jet pilot. This service took him to places such as Korea and Taiwan. [1] Wallace P. Carson Jr. was in private legal practice from 1962 to 1977.
While still serving in the military and working in private practice,Wallace Carson was invited by Oregon Republican politician Bob Packwood to run for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives in 1966. [1] There he served two terms,including one as majority leader. [1] Then he was elected in 1970 to the Oregon State Senate,and re-elected in 1974. [1] He served as minority floor leader during his second term. [5]
Carson began his career in the judicial branch of government following his years in the legislature with an appointment to the Marion County Circuit Court by Governor Robert W. Straub in 1977. [1] Governor Vic Atiyeh appointed him to replace Justice Denecke on the Oregon Supreme Court in July 1982, [3] he was elected to a full six-year term in November of that year,and he was re-elected in 1988,1994,and 2000. [6] He was chairman of the Oregon Appellate Judges Association from 1989 to 1991.
Carson's fellow justices chose him to serve as chief justice from 1991 to 2005. [1] He was the longest serving Chief Justice in Oregon's history,and about 94% of the decisions issued by the court under his tenure were unanimous decisions. [7] While on the court he served as chairperson of the Commission on Appellate Court Performance Standards for the National Center for State Courts. [5] Carson did not seek re-election in 2006. Virginia Linder was elected to the position he vacated.
Carson has served on the Board of Trustees of Willamette University since 1970. He is currently a senior judge for the state,subject to temporary assignment as a judge on any court in the Oregon Judicial Department. [8] He has been married to his wife,the former Gloria Stalk,for over 50 years. She was a year behind him in high school,and they met at a local pool,where he was swimming and she had been playing tennis. [9]
Willamette University is a private liberal arts college with locations in Salem and Portland,Oregon. Founded in 1842,it is the oldest college in the Western United States. Originally named the Oregon Institute,the school was an unaffiliated outgrowth of the Methodist Mission. The name was changed to Wallamet University in 1852,followed by the current spelling in 1870. Willamette founded the first medical school and law school in the Pacific Northwest in the second half of the 19th century.
The Oregon Supreme Court (OSC) is the highest state court in the U.S. state of Oregon. The only court that may reverse or modify a decision of the Oregon Supreme Court is the Supreme Court of the United States. The OSC holds court at the Oregon Supreme Court Building in Salem,Oregon,near the capitol building on State Street. The building was finished in 1914 and also houses the state's law library,while the courtroom is also used by the Oregon Court of Appeals.
The Connecticut Appellate Court is the court of first appeals for all cases arising from the Connecticut Superior Courts. Its creation in 1983 required Connecticut's voters and legislature to amend the state's constitution. The court heard its first cases on October 4,1983. Virginia Lynn Linder is an American judge from Oregon who served as the 99th justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from January 2007 until January 2016. She served on the Oregon Court of Appeals from 1997 until her election to the state's Supreme Court in the 2006,an electoral campaign in which she defeated former Labor Commissioner and Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Roberts.
Paul J. De Muniz is a retired American judge in the state of Oregon. He is the first Hispanic Chief Justice in the history of the Oregon Supreme Court. He was elected to the court in 2000,and elected as chief justice in 2006. He won re-election in May 2006 for another six-year term on the state's highest court. De Muniz previously served on the Oregon Court of Appeals for ten years.
Edwin J. Peterson is an American jurist in the state of Oregon. He was the 39th Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court,serving from 1983 to 1991,and is currently a Distinguished Jurist in Residence at Willamette University College of Law in Salem,Oregon.

W. Michael Gillette is an American attorney and retired judge in the state of Oregon. He was a justice of the Oregon Supreme Court,where he served from 1986 until 2010. A graduate of Harvard Law School,he was previously a judge on the Oregon Court of Appeals from 1977 to 1986.
Robert D. "Skip" Durham is a retired justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. Previously,Durham was a judge for the Oregon Court of Appeals and a lawyer in private practice.

Berkeley "Bud" Lent was an American politician and jurist in the state of Oregon. He was the 38th Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court,serving from 1982 to 1983. Elected to the court in 1976,Lent remained until 1988. Previously,the native Oregonian also was elected to both branches of the Oregon legislature,including time as the Senate Majority Leader,and was a county circuit court judge. Lent also served as a mediator and senior judge in Oregon.
George Henry Burnett was an American attorney and judge in the state of Oregon. He was the 21st chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court serving twice as chief first in 1921 to 1923,and then in 1927 when he died in office. Overall he served on Oregon’s highest court from 1911 until 1927.
Robert Eakin was an American judge and attorney in the state of Oregon. He served as the 19th Chief Justice on the Oregon Supreme Court. Eakin was the head judge of the court from 1911 to 1913,and was on the court overall from 1907 until 1917.

The chief executive of the branch is the Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. The native Oregonian was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1979 to 1986. Previously,he was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon from 1972 to 1979,and was the chief judge of that court from 1976 to 1979. Of German ancestry,he was a veteran of World War II and received both his undergraduate education and law degree from Willamette University.
Meagan A. Flynn is an American judge who is the chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. She previously served as a judge on the Oregon Court of Appeals from 2014 to 2017. Flynn was appointed to the state’s supreme court by the Governor Kate Brown in March 2017.
