The party was established in the Oregon Territory in February 1857 as the "Free State Republican Party of Oregon" and held its first state convention on April 1,1859,after Oregon achieved statehood.
Oregon's 2nd congressional district is the largest of Oregon's six districts,and is the seventh largest district in the nation. It is the second-largest congressional district in the nation that does not cover an entire state. The district covers roughly two-thirds of the state,east of the Willamette Valley. It includes all of Baker,Crook,Deschutes,Gilliam,Grant,Harney,Hood River,Jackson,Jefferson,Klamath,Lake,Malheur,Morrow,Sherman,Umatilla,Union,Wallowa,Wasco,Wheeler counties,and part of eastern Josephine county,including some of the Grants Pass area. The district had been represented by Republican Greg Walden since 1999. Walden did not run for re-election in 2020. Republican Cliff Bentz of Ontario was elected to fill the seat and was sworn in January 2021.
