Ian Andrew Wright is a former New Zealand rower who won an Olympic bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Wright has won 31 national titles during his career. After his rowing career ended, he became a coach and his Swiss lightweight men's four team won gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He is now Australia's head rowing coach announced in September 2016. He immediately coached the Australian men's four to a gold medal at the 2017 world rowing championships.

In the history of the World Rowing Championships, 1978 was the only year when the lightweight rowing championships were not held in conjunction with the open men and women event; the lightweight events had already been held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in August.

Thomas Baroukh is a French rower. He competed in the Men's lightweight coxless four event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, finishing in 7th. At the 2016 Olympics, he was part of the French lightweight coxless four that won the bronze medal. The same team, consisting of Baroukh, Franck Solforosi, Guillaume Raineau and Thibault Colard, also won the bronze medal at the 2015 World Rowing Championships and bronze at the 2015 European Rowing Championships. Baroukh's previous team, which included Solforosi, Raineau and Augustin Mouterde won the bronze at the 2013 and 2014 European Championships. Baroukh and Mouterde won the silver medal in the men's lightweight pair at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
Roderick Chisholm is a British lightweight class former rower who represented both Great Britain and Australia at world championships. He is an Australian national champion, a World Champion and a dual Olympian who competed at the world class level in both sculls and in sweep-oared boats.
Eleftherios Konsolas is a Greek rower. He participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London where he competed in the Men's lightweight double sculls event together with his teammate Panagiotis Magdanis. They qualified for the B finals, where they reached a second place, finishing in 8th place overall.
Panagiotis Magdanis is a Greek rower. He is a two-time World Champion in the men's lightweight quadruple sculls.
The men's lightweight coxless four competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held on 6–11 August at the Lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas. This was the last time that this boat class competed, as FISA axed it after the 2017 World Rowing Championships with immediate effect.
