Wasps Women are a women's rugby union based in Acton, London, England. [1] They were founded in 1984 and play in the Premier 15s. [2] [3] [4] They are the women's team of Wasps FC, [5] who are affiliated to Premiership Rugby team Wasps. [1] [6] They play their home matches at Wasps FC's Twyford Avenue Sports Ground. [7]

History

Wasps Women was founded in 1984 by Sue Martineau and have played in the top flight of English women's rugby union since 1991 [1] [6] as they were not involved in the first season of the Women's Premiership in 1990. [8] In 1992, they won the Women's National 7s title. [9] They have won league titles including three consecutive wins between 2001 and 2004, [10] including a league and cup double in 2004. [11] Aside of their local rivalries with fellow London clubs Saracens Women and Richmond Women, Wasps Women also have a rivalry with Bristol Bears Women, formally Clifton Ladies. [12] Wasps Women run two teams with Wasps Women II playing in Championship 2 South West after being relegated from Championship 1 South in 2013. [13]

Being affiliated to Wasps, Wasps Women have played matches at the Coventry Building Society Arena in Coventry and Wasps' former home ground, Adams Park in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. [14] Wasps Women also take part in charity games, including playing against Guernsey Ladies in Sark. [15]

In July 2021; in line with a company wide rebrand, the team were rebranded Wasps Women having previously been called Wasps Ladies. [16]

Notable players

Wasps Women have provided a number of players for international teams. Sue Day and Shelley Rae played for both Wasps Women and the England women's national rugby union team. Stephanie Te Ohaere-Fox played for both Wasps Women and the New Zealand women's national rugby union team. [2]

The 2013–14 RFU Championship, known for sponsorship reasons as the Greene King IPA Championship, was the fifth season of the professionalised format of the RFU Championship, the second tier of the English rugby union league system run by the Rugby Football Union. It was held between 14 September 2013 and 4 June 2014. It was contested by eleven English clubs and one from Jersey in the Channel Islands. It was also the first Championship season with a title sponsor, as the Rugby Football Union and Greene King Brewery reached a deal by which the brewery would become the competition's main sponsor from 2013–14 through to 2016–17.

Bristol Bears Women, formerly Clifton Ladies RFC, then Bristol Ladies, is a women's rugby union team based in Bristol, England. They are a standalone, independent rugby club, running in partnership with the Bristol Bears since becoming affiliated to them in 2008 and play their home matches at Dings RFC in the Premier 15s.

Lichfield Ladies Rugby Union Football Club is a women's rugby union club based in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. They play their home matches at Cooke Fields and play in the Women's Premiership. They are also the women's team of Lichfield Rugby Union Football Club.

Richmond Women, formally Finchley RFC, is a women's rugby union team based in Richmond, London, England. They were founded in 1986 and played in the Women's Premiership. They are also the women's team of Richmond F.C.

Worcester Warriors Women, formerly known as Worcester Valkyries, are a women's rugby union club in Worcester, Worcestershire, England. They were founded in 1993, as Worcester Ladies, and play in the Premier 15s. They were originally created as the women's team of Worcester Wanderers, but became part of the English Premiership team Worcester Warriors' organisation ahead of the 2016/17 season. They subsequently became an independent entity during the 2022–23 season on the demise of their parent company.

Premiership Women's Rugby, officially known as Allianz Premiership Women's Rugby or The Allianz PWR, is an annual semi-professional women's rugby union club competition at the highest level of the English rugby union system, and is run by the Rugby Football Union (RFU). It is contested by nine clubs who play two series of round-robin matches to determine the four participants of a single-elimination tournament. It began play in the 2017–18 season, superseding the former Women's Premiership, and introducing elements of professionalism in the sport's highest level. In its first six seasons, the competition was known as the Premier 15s. Gloucester-Hartpury are the current champions, while Saracens have won the most championships (3).

Leanne Nicole Infante is an English rugby union player. She made her debut for England in 2013 and was a finalist in the 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup. At club level, she plays for Saracens.

Harriet Victoria Millar-Mills is an English rugby union player and a member of the England Women's Rugby team.

Craig Hampson is an English rugby union player who plays for the Ealing Trailfinders in the RFU Championship.
