Water polo was one of several sports at the 1971 Mediterranean Games. The fourth Mediterranean Games was held in Izmir, Turkey. Only men's teams participated in the water polo tournament. [1] [2] [3]

Veljko Uskoković is a retired Montenegrin water polo player. His club achievements are: European Champion 2000, 4 times Yugoslav Champion 4 times Yugoslav Cup Winner. Member of Yugoslav national water polo team from 1991 to 2002. Team captain from 1996 to 2001. Uskoković played more than 300 games, and scored over 400 goals.
Igor Milanović is a Serbian professional water polo head coach and former player. He is considered one of the best water polo players of all time. Milanović had an illustrious professional career spanning twenty years.
The 1971 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the VI Mediterranean Games, and commonly known as Izmir 1971, were the 6th Mediterranean Games. The Games were held in İzmir, Turkey, from 6 to 17 October 1971, where 1,362 athletes from 15 countries participated. There were a total of 137 medal events from 17 different sports.

It was governed by the Water Polo Association of FR Yugoslavia (1992–2003), then the Water Polo Association of Serbia and Montenegro (2003–2006). The team won medals in the Olympics, World and European Championships, FINA World Cup, FINA World League, Mediterranean Games and Universiade.

Ratko Rudić is a retired Croatian water polo coach and a former water polo player. As of 2015, he has won 38 medals as a coach at major events, making him the most successful water polo coach in history, and second most successful team sport coach of all time. He won four gold medals, of which three consecutive, with three different national teams at the Summer Olympics, as well as three gold medals with three national teams at the World Championships, among many others. In 2007 was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, described as "one of the best, if not the best, water polo coach to walk the deck of the pool".

The Italy men's national water polo team is the most successful team among men, while for women it is the Spain women's national water polo team that gain success with the first inaugural Edition in 2018 Mediterranean Games.

The 2013 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the XVII Mediterranean Games and commonly known as Mersin 2013, was an international multi-sport event held from 20 to 30 June 2013 in Mersin, Turkey. Mersin was announced as the host city at the General Assembly of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM) on 23 February 2011. Mersin is the second city in Turkey after İzmir to host the Mediterranean Games. All 24 member National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the ICMG participated in the Games. The official programme for the Games is featuring events in 27 different sports.
Anna "Anni" Espar Llaquet is a Spanish water polo player who won the gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona. She also won the silver medal at the 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics.

The water polo tournament at the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona took place between 27 June and 1 July at the Campclar Aquatic Centre. It was the first year women's teams were included in the water polo event.
Alexandros Evgenios Gounas is a Greek water polo player. He is member of the Greece men's national water polo team since 2008 and won a bronze medal at the 16th FINA World Championships and competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He plays for Greek powerhouse Olympiacos, with whom he won the 2017–18 LEN Champions League in Genoa. Moreover, in his collection are 6 Greek Championships and 6 Greek Cups in which he was voted Most Valuable Player four times, with them being the 2011–2012 NC Vouliagmeni, 2013–2014 Olympiacos, 2017–2018 Olympiacos, and 2018–2019 Olympiacos.
María Elena Sánchez González is a Spanish water polo goalkeeper who won the silver medal with the women's national water polo team at the 2020 Summer Olympics celebrated in Tokyo, Japan.
