North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country in East Asia. It constitutes the northern half of the Korean Peninsula and borders China and Russia to the north at the Yalu (Amnok) and Tumen rivers, and South Korea to the south at the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The country's western border is formed by the Yellow Sea, while its eastern border is defined by the Sea of Japan. The 2002 FIFA World Cup, also branded as Korea/Japan 2002, was the 17th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial football world championship for men's national teams organized by FIFA. China participated and hosted the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou on 12–27 November 2010. China achieved a historic milestone by surpassing the 400-medal threshold in a single edition, so becoming the first nation to do so in the history of the Asian Games.
The 2012 K League, officially known as Hyundai Oilbank K-League 2012, was the 30th season of the K League. It was sponsored by Hyundai Oilbank. The curling competition of the 2014 Winter Olympics was held at the Ice Cube Curling Center, nicknamed "the Ice Cube". It is the sixth time that curling was on the Olympic program. The 2018 IIHF World Championship was an international ice hockey tournament hosted by the Danish cities of Copenhagen and Herning, held from 4 to 20 May 2018. The IIHF announced the winning bid on 23 May 2014 in Minsk, Belarus. South Korea made its debut at the World Championship, having played in the lower divisions previously.
Japan participated in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea from 19 September to 4 October 2014. The nation sent a total of 718 athletes in the games. Japan finished third in the medal table with 47 gold medals, 77 silver medals, and 76 silver medals.
The men's tournament of the 2014 Asian Games Basketball Competition was held from 20 September to 3 October 2014 in Incheon, South Korea. China was the defending Gold medal winners of the competition in 2010, which they won in their home soil. South Korea emulated that feat by winning the Gold Medal in Incheon in 2014. Iran and Japan completed the podium by winning the Silver and Bronze medals, respectively. Games of the tournament were held at the 7,406 seat Samsan World Gymnasium, and the 5,158 seat Hwaseong Sports Complex.

The Dai Hong Dan incident took place on 29 October 2007, when the North Korean cargo vessel in the Indian Ocean MV Dai Hong Dan (대홍단호) was attacked and temporarily seized by Somali pirates off Somalia. The following day, the crew of the vessel overpowered the pirates with the support of a US naval vessel.

The legal status of cannabis in North Korea is unclear due to the lack of sources available to the outside world. Cannabis for industrial purposes (hemp), which has a low THC, is legal and is widely used in the country for the production of consumer goods. As a result of the lack of reliable information on North Korea, myths suggesting the legal or widespread use of marijuana have been spread by some media outlets.
South Korea participated in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia from 18 August to 2 September 2018. It was the 18th appearance of the country at the Asian Games, except the first edition in Delhi. As one of the best competitors at the Games, South Korea's best achievement was in the 2002 Busan, with the acquisition of 96 gold, 80 silver and 84 bronze medals. At the latest edition in 2014 Incheon, the country had collected 79 gold, 71 silver, and 84 bronze medals.
