Waterfall Farms was a Tennessee Walking Horse farm located in Bedford County, Tennessee. During their heyday, they stood World and World Grand Champion stallions such as JFK, He's Puttin' on the Ritz, Pride's Generator, and Watch It Now at stud and had multiple show horses. Waterfall Farms was later sold and no longer is an operational horse facility.

History

Waterfall Farms was a 936-acre property located in Bedford County, Tennessee, a few miles from Shelbyville. It was first bought by Buddy Hugh in the 1960s and had multiple owners until 1994, when it was purchased by Bill and Sandra Johnson and given its ultimate name. The front 89 acres of the property housed the majority of the horses, with a guest center, cottages and multiple barns, totaling over 300 stalls, and a riding arena with bleachers. The arena was the site of horse shows and the annual colt preview. [1] Waterfall Farms hosted horse shows sanctioned by the Walking Horse Owners Association (WHOA) for several years. [2] They had a number of employees, [3] including notable trainers such as Tracy Boyd. [4] In 2010 Waterfall was sold to Wayne and Jean Day of Goodlettsville and the name was changed. The couple announced at the time that they planned to stand stallions as well as raise cattle on the back part of the farm. [5] The following year, the Johnsons were suspended for alleged violations of the Horse Protection Act that happened in 2000, but this did not affect Waterfall as it was no longer theirs. [6]

Stallions

Waterfall stood many World and World Grand Champion stallions at stud to the public. The Johnsons owned the 1994 World Grand Champion He's Puttin' on the Ritz during his show career and stood him at stud for the rest of his life. [1] [7] A few months after buying the farm, the Johnsons purchased JFK, a stallion who was only defeated once in the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. He stood at stud there for many years. [1] Pride's Generator, a major influence in Walking Horse bloodlines who sired two World Grand Champions and over 100 World Champions, stood at Waterfall for several years in the 1990s. He was owned by Claude Crowley. [8] In addition to standing stallions owned by others, Waterfall had a training barn and showed horses. They owned multiple show horses, including Watch It Now, [9] who was originally named The Titan. [10] Watch It Now won the World Grand Championship in 2009, the same year he was purchased by Waterfall. He was retired to stud there the fall after his Championship. [11]

Waterfall Farms implemented an incentive program to recognize foals sired by their stallions. If a horse sired by a Waterfall stallion during the years he stood at stud there won a World Championship, it received $100,000, with $50,000 going to the breeder and $50,000 going to the owner if they were two different people. Ebony Masterpiece was a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won a World Grand Championship in 1962. After his show career he retired to stud, where he sired over 3,500 foals, six of which also became World Grand Champions.

Billy Gray was a Tennessee Walking Horse trainer who won four World Grand Championships on different horses. Gray was named Trainer of the Year in 1982.

Dark Spirit's Rebel was a Tennessee Walking Horse who won a World Grand Championship in 1992. Nicknamed Rebel, the horse was trained by Alabama resident Bud Dunn. After his show career was over, Rebel sired the 1999 World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse, RPM.

He's Puttin' on the Ritz (1991-2016) was a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won World Championships at the ages of two and three before winning his breed's World Grand Championship in 1996.

Gen's Armed and Dangerous is a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won his breed's World Grand Championship in 1994.

Rowdy Rev is a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won the Reserve World Grand Championship in the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. Although he repeatedly competed in the World Grand Championship, he never won, despite wins in other large shows.

The Coach (2004-2017) was a Tennessee Walking Horse stallion who won the World Grand Championship in 2010.

Cash for Keeps is a Tennessee Walking Horse who won the World Grand Championship in the 2000 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. He returned to competition 6 years later and won Plantation Lite-Shod World Championships with both Ray Gilmer and Dr. Jeanne Morrison.

Pride of Midnight (1966-1979) was a Tennessee Walking Horse who had a short career as a show horse but became very notable as a sire in his breed.

Master of Jazz is a Tennessee Walking Horse who won the World Grand Championship in 2007. Originally ridden in amateur horse show classes, he made the transition to professional competition in 2005 and won his breed's largest show, the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, two years later.

Pride's Generator (1975–2001) was a Tennessee Walking Horse who won three World Championships before being retired to breeding. Standing at stud first at S. W. Beech Stables and later at Waterfall Farms, he sired over 2,000 foals, of which two became World Grand Champions and over 100 became World Champions.

Watch It Now is a Tennessee Walking Horse who won the World Grand Championship in the 2009 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.

Main Power is a Tennessee Walking Horse who won the World Grand Championship in the 2005 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. He had previously been the Three-Year-Old World Champion in two categories, Four-Year-Old World Champion and Reserve World Grand Champion.

Out On Parole (1997–2018) was a Tennessee Walking Horse who won the World Grand Championship in the 2002 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.

The Black Night Shade was a Tennessee Walking Horse who won the World Grand Championship in the 2004 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.

Santana's El Nino is a Tennessee Walking Horse who won the World Grand Championship in the 2008 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. He was trained by Link Webb.
