Career
Born and raised in Hampton,Virginia,Gomes graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in recreation and leisure studies,and is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. [1] In 1992,he played collegiate summer baseball with the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League and was named a league all-star. [2] [3]
In between,Gomes spent six seasons in the Minor Leagues, [4] and also played winter ball with the Leones del Caracas club of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League during the 2004 season. [5]
Following his retirement from baseball,Gomes returned to his hometown area of Suffolk and formed the Virginia Baseball Academy. The VBA soon would be located at the Hampton Family YMCA on LaSalle Avenue in Hampton,offering baseball training services,practice venues,and baseball products. In addition,the VBA served as the operator of the Peninsula Pilots AAU baseball and softball organization. [6]
Gomes was named to the Colonial Athletic Association's 25th anniversary baseball team in 2010. He was inducted into the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame in April 2001 and was inducted into the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame on November 6,2010.
John Anthony Franco is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as a left-handed relief pitcher between 1984 and 2005. Franco established himself as an All-Star player with the Cincinnati Reds before spending the majority of his career with the New York Mets. He ended his 22-year career with one final season with the Houston Astros.

The Chatham Anglers, more commonly referred to as the Chatham A's and formerly the Chatham Athletics, are a collegiate summer baseball team based in Chatham, Massachusetts. The team is a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) and plays in the league's East Division. Chatham plays its home games at historic Veteran's Field, the team's home since 1923, in the town of Chatham on the Lower Cape. The A's have been operated by the non-profit Chatham Athletic Association since 1963.
