Wayne Thornburg was an American politician from Arizona. He served two consecutive terms in the Arizona State Senate during the 7th and 8th Arizona State Legislatures,holding one of the two seats from Yavapai County. [1] He was a cattle rancher and agriculturist near Phoenix,who at one point was the largest producer of sugar beet seed in the world.
Thornburg was born in 1891 in California. He moved from Van Nuys,California,to Arizona in 1919,originally locating in the Prescott area,where he managed several ranches:the Bixby ranch,the Diamond 2 Cattle Ranch,and the Three Links Cattle Ranch. [2] [3] [4] In 1918,upon U. S. entrance into World War I,Thornburg enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard. [5] In October of that year,he attended their officer training program at Fort Monroe in Virginia. He graduated and was given the rank of Lieutenant. [6] He was honorably discharged in February 1919. [2] [7] He moved from the Prescott area to Phoenix in 1927. [2]
He was chairman of the public lands committee which was the driving force behind getting the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934 passed into law. He pioneered the growing of both cardinal grapes and winter sweet corn in the Salt River Valley,and his ranch in Litchfield Park was one of the largest producers of cardinal grapes in the country. At one point,he and his partner,Floyd Smith were the largest producers of sugar beet seed in the world. He also developed and patented a variety of grape,the "robin grape". In addition to his grapes,he also grew cotton and alfalfa,as well as raising cattle. Thornburg died on August 8,1980,in the Beatitudes Care Center in Glendale. [2]

Marinette was a ghost town in Maricopa County,Arizona,located just northwest of Peoria,Arizona,along the Atchison,Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The site was promoted in the early 20th century for production of citrus fruit,apricots,olives,and other crops. The town was purchased by the Southwest Cotton company,a Goodyear subsidiary,in 1920. Throughout the late 40s and 50s the J. G. Boswell Company owned much of the land for its agricultural production. The town existed until 1957,when the post office serving Marinette was moved to Youngtown. The place where Marinette once was later became the site of Del Webb Corporation's Sun City,Arizona.
William John Murphy was an American businessman,contractor,land developer and founder of the Arizona Improvement Company. He is also remembered as the "Founder of Glendale,Arizona" and an important contributor to much of the early development in the Phoenix area.
Fred Tuttle Colter was an Arizona rancher and farmer,as well as being the state senator for Apache County beginning with Arizona's second state legislature in 1915. Colter spent six terms in the Arizona Senate. He also led the fight on Arizona's behalf to maintain control over the water from the Colorado River,coining the slogan,"Save the Colorado for Arizona". He was a close ally of the state's first governor,George W. P. Hunt. Prior to his election to the state senate,Colter had served as the state's fair commissioner.
Nahas was a chain of department stores owned by A. S. Nahas,operating in Greater Los Angeles,carrying clothing,household goods and electronics. They also acquired Rathbun's department store at 5311 Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood and cobranded it "Nahas Rathbuns" before the branch closed in 1980. The remaining Nahas stores were closed from 1981 to 1982.

He was one of the largest sheep ranchers in Arizona,and was prominent in both the National Wool Growers Association and the National Livestock Association. For six years he served on the board of the Arizona State Fair commission,five as its president.
Delmore Dean Crabb was an American politician from Arizona who served in the Arizona state senate during the 2nd Arizona State Legislature. In addition to his brief political career,Crabb was a cattle rancher in both Arizona and California.
Ernest R. Hall was an Arizona politician who served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 3rd Arizona State Legislature. He ran several other times for the state legislature,mostly for the State Senate,but once for the State House of Representatives. He also ran three times for Arizona Secretary of State,winning in the 1920 election. Other offices he held were justice of the peace and postmaster,both in the Salome,Arizona area. He was a combat veteran of World War I,and was a very successful farmer in Maricopa County for several decades.
William P. Mahoney was an American lawyer and politician who served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 1915 to 1916 and in the Arizona Senate from 1917 to 1918,as a member of the Democratic Party. After his tenure in the state legislature he served as the sheriff of Mohave County,Arizona.
Charles Hays Rutherford was an American lawyer and politician from Arizona who served in the Arizona State Senate from 1917 through 1918,during the 3rd Arizona State Legislature. He also served during the 6th Arizona State Legislature. He served in the Army Reserve,first in the JAG corps,then in the Specialist Reserve Corps,eventually attaining the rank of Colonel. From 1930 until his death in 1950 he served as a civilian aide to the Secretary of War. He practiced law,first in Indiana early in his career,and then in Arizona,until he was disbarred by the Arizona Supreme Court in 1949.
Charles W. Herndon was an American lawyer and politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona House of Representatives during the 4th Arizona State Legislature.
Anthony A. Johns was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 4th Arizona State Legislature,holding one of the two seats from Yavapai County,as well as serving as President of the Senate. He also held one of the seats from Yavapai County in the Arizona House of Representatives three times,in the 2nd,3rd and 13th Arizona State Legislatures,serving as the Speaker of the House during the 3rd Legislature. He was a long-time resident of Prescott,and one of the largest sheepherders in Yavapai County. Other business interests included mining and construction. Other offices held included a regent for the University of Arizona,chairman of the Arizona Highway Commission,chief of the Prescott Fire Department,president of the Arizona Wool Growers Association,and vice-president of the National Wool Growers Association.

W. A. "Art" Saunders was an American cattle rancher and politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 5th Arizona State Legislature,holding the seat from Apache County. In addition,he served several years as a supervisor on the board of supervisors in Apache County,as well as the county surveyor in Navajo County.
John P. Cull was an American politician from Arizona. He served several terms in the Arizona State Legislature,beginning in Arizona House of Representatives during the 4th Arizona State Legislature,and then in the Arizona State Senate first in the 5th Arizona State Legislature,and again in the 10th Arizona State Legislature. In both of his re-election attempts to the State Senate he was defeated in the Democrat's primary. During his career he was involved in the banking and mercantile industries,and later on was one of the largest cattle ranchers in Cochise County. During the 1930s he also served on the Arizona State Livestock Sanitary Board.
Celora Martin Stoddard was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 5th Arizona State Legislature,holding one of the two seats from Maricopa County. He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for governor in 1928. A World War I veteran,he helped establish the first American Legion post in Arizona in 1919,and became its first commander. He would later be selected the Legion's state commander,and also served a term as the national vice-commander of the organization. He was well known in the mining industry in Arizona.

He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 10th Arizona State Legislature,holding the seat from Coconino County. A rancher and merchant,Midgley also ran for the Republican nomination for the governorship of Arizona.
The Three Links Cattle Company was a cattle ranching company in Walnut Grove,Arizona. By the 1950s,it was one of the largest cattle ranches in Arizona. It was sold to Rex Ellsworth and his brother,Reed in 1959.
