Mthawelanga Webster Mfebe (born 14 July 1959) is a South African businessman,politician,and former trade unionist. He has been the chief executive officer of the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors since 2013.
Before entering business full-time,Mfebe represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 1996 and then in the Free State Provincial Legislature from 1996 to 2004. He was the Free State's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts,Culture,Science and Technology from 1997 to 2004.
Born on 14 July 1959, [1] Mfebe rose to political prominence during apartheid through the trade union movement and Mass Democratic Movement. [2]
In South Africa's first post-apartheid elections in 1994,Mfebe was elected to an ANC seat in the National Assembly. [3] He remained in the seat until 1996,when he resigned in order to join the Free State Provincial Legislature;he was sworn in on 18 December. [4] He was also appointed to Premier Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri's Executive Council as MEC for Sport,Arts,Culture,Science and Technology. [5] During his first year in the portfolio,his department held the inaugural Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe),an arts festival that thereafter became an annual event. [6]
In the 1999 general election,Mfebe was elected to a full term in the provincial legislature, [1] and newly elected Premier Winkie Direko retained him in his position as MEC. [5] He left the provincial government after the next general election in 2004.
From 2005 to 2009,Mfebe worked at the SABC,where,among other positions,he was head of sport. From 2009 to 2012,he was executive director for stakeholder relations at Basil Read,a construction company. He also had his own consulting company,Phendula Consulting,as well as non-executive directorships in other companies. [2] [5]
On 1 January 2013,he took office as chief executive officer of the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC;since renamed the South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors),a not-for-profit employers' organisation in the civil engineering sector. [2] In this capacity,Mfebe has occasionally attracted media attention as a critic of government policies, [7] for example through a 2019 open letter he wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa about the power of extortion rackets targeting the construction sector. Cassel Mathale is a South African politician who was the third Premier of Limpopo between March 2009 and July 2013. He is currently the Deputy Minister of Police in the South African government and before that was Deputy Minister of Small Business Development from February 2018 to May 2019.
Mpho Franklyn Parks Tau is a South African politician who has been a Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs since March 2023 and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since February 2023,representing the African National Congress. Pule Herbert Isak Makgoe was a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist. A member of the African National Congress,he was elected to the Free State Provincial Legislature in 1994. After holding multiple positions in the Executive Council of the Free State,he was appointed Member of the Executive Council for Education in May 2009,a position he would hold until his death in March 2023.
Tshenuwani Simon Farisani is a South African politician,theologian,and Lutheran minister. During apartheid,he was one of the country's most prominent black clergymen and preached anti-apartheid liberation theology from his diocese in Venda and Transvaal. He founded the Black Evangelic Youth Organisation with Cyril Ramaphosa in the early 1970s and was also active in the Black Consciousness movement,especially as president of the Black People's Convention from 1973 to 1975. He was arrested on four occasions,according to Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience,and he testified abroad about the torture he was subjected to by the apartheid police.
Kgosientsho "Sputla" Ramokgopa is a South African politician who is the Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity. He was the Mayor of Tshwane from 2010 to 2016. He was also a Member of the Executive Council in the Gauteng provincial government in 2019 and worked in the Presidency of South Africa as head of infrastructure from 2019 to 2023.
Azwindini Jeremiah "Jerry" Ndou is a South African politician and diplomat who has served as a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) since October 2022. Before that,he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature and Limpopo Executive Council.
Seaparo Charles Sekoati,sometimes misspelled Seaparo Sekwati,is a South African politician who is currently serving in the Limpopo provincial government as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance. He has been a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2004 and was previously MEC for Health and Social Development from 2004 to 2009 and,before his appointment to his current position,MEC for Economic Development,Environment and Tourism from 2013 to 2019.
