Hesse or Hessia, officially the State of Hesse, is a state of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its capital city is Wiesbaden, and the largest metropolitan area is Frankfurt am Main.
The Werra, a river in central Germany, is the right-bank headwater of the Weser. Weser is a synonym in an old dialect of German. The Werra has its source near Eisfeld in southern Thuringia. After 293 kilometres (182 mi) the Werra joins the river Fulda in the town of Hann. Münden, forming the Weser.

The book, Hesse's ninth novel, was written in German, in a simple, lyrical style. It was published in the U.S. in 1951 and became influential during the 1960s. Hesse dedicated the first part of it to Romain Rolland and the second part to Wilhelm Gundert, his cousin.

Its source is in the western Taunus, Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis district, near a small village named Wisper. It flows southwest through a densely forested valley with some medieval castle ruins surrounded by a popular hiking area. A man-made lake, the Wispersee, is stocked with trout and is a popular fishing destination. The Wisper flows into the Rhine at Lorch.
The Usa is a river that is 34 km long in Hesse, Germany. It is right tributary of the Wetter, which it joins at the outskirts of Friedberg. Its source is in the Taunus mountains, near the town Neu-Anspach. The principal towns along the river are Usingen, Bad Nauheim and Friedberg.

The Kahl is a river in the northern Spessart in Bavaria and Hesse, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Main and is 35.6 km (22.1 mi) long. The name Kahl comes from the Old High German word kaldaha, which means cool and clear. The Kahl rises from two sources left and right of the road at the foot of the Spessart hills, near Kleinkahl. These springs produce 50–60 litres per second. The Kahl flows into the river Main in Kahl am Main. The mouth is near the old Kahl Nuclear Power Plant. The largest tributaries are Westerbach, Sommerkahl, Reichenbach and Geiselbach.
Gersprenz is a river that starts in the Odenwald, Hesse and flows into the river Main near Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, Germany. Including its source river Mergbach, it is 62.1 km (38.6 mi) long, without the Mergbach it is 51.3 km (31.9 mi) long.
Elbbach is a river in Germany, about 38.1 kilometres (23.7 mi) long. It is a right tributary of the Lahn which in turn is a right tributary of the Rhine. The Elbbach starts near Westerburg in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and flows into the Lahn near Limburg an der Lahn in the state of Hesse. The drainage basin of this river has an area of 323.67 square kilometres (124.97 sq mi).
