The Men's Bantamweight Weightlifting Event ( 56 kg) is the second lightest men's event at the weightlifting competition, limiting competitors to a maximum of 56 kilograms of body mass. Each weightlifter had three attempts for both the snatch and clean and jerk lifting methods. The total of the best successful lift of each method was used to determine the final rankings and medal winners. Competition took place on 21 July in the Izmailovo Sports Palace. [1] [2]

For third place there was a tie between Tadeusz Dembończyk and Andreas Letz as they both weighed 55.60 kg at the weigh-in and they both had a 265 kg total. They were re-weighed after the event, Dembończyk weighed 0.1 kg less than Letz and was awarded the bronze medal. [2]

Nauru competed in the Olympic Games for the first time at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States from 19 July to 4 August 1996. Tadeusz Dembonczyk was a Polish weightlifter. He won the Bronze medal 56 kg in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He was awarded the Bronze after he tied with Andreas Letz after both lifted 265 kg in total and they had weighted 55.6 kg before the competition and were reweighed and Dembonczyk was awarded the bronze.

The Men's Light-heavyweight Weightlifting Event (–82.5 kg) was the sixth lightest event at the weightlifting competition. Each weightlifter had three attempts for both the snatch and clean and jerk lifting methods. The total of the best successful lift of each method was used to determine the final rankings and medal winners. Competition took place on 4 August in the 4,500 capacity Albert Gersten Pavilion. The weightlifter from Romania won the gold, with a combined lift of 355 kg.

The men's 56 kg weightlifting competitions at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne took place on 23 November at the Royal Exhibition Building. It was the third appearance of the bantamweight class.
