Wenzhou or Wen Prefecture was a zhou (prefecture) in imperial China,centering on modern Wenzhou,Zhejiang,China. It existed (intermittently) from 675 to 1265,when the Song dynasty renamed it Rui'an Prefecture.
The modern prefecture-level city Wenzhou,created in 1949,retains its name.

Wenzhou,historically known as Wenchow is a prefecture-level city in southeastern Zhejiang province in the People's Republic of China. Wenzhou is located at the extreme south east of Zhejiang Province with its borders connecting to Lishui on the west,Taizhou on the north,and Fujian to the south. The line has a total length of 282.4 kilometres (175.5 mi) and forms part of Hangzhou–Fuzhou–Shenzhen railway. Construction began in October 2005,and the line opened to commercial service on September 28,2009. Trains running on the line reach top speeds of 250 kilometres per hour,and the shortest trip between Ningbo and Wenzhou takes 1 hour 12 minutes.
Yongjia Xuanjue,also known as Yongjia Zhenjue,was a Zen and Tiantai Buddhist monk who lived during the Tang dynasty. The name Yongjia is derived from the city of his birth,which is now called Wenzhou. He is also known by his nickname "The Overnight Guest" because of his first encounter with his teacher,Huineng. On a visit to Caoxi (漕溪),where Huineng's Nanhua Temple is located,Yongjia was convinced to stay just one night,during which his enlightenment was acknowledged. He supposedly died while meditating in 713. He is best remembered today as the author of the Song of Enlightenment,often known by its Japanese name Shodoka (證道歌). This work remains popular in contemporary Zen practice.
