Wendy Ewart is a British scientist who worked for the Medical Research Council (MRC) from 2008 to 2014.

Education

Ewart earned a BSc in physiology and biochemistry from the University of Southampton, and a PhD in neuroscience at the University of Bristol. [1] She was later awarded an additional honorary doctorate from the University of Bristol after her retirement. [1]

Career

Before joining the MRC, Ewart worked at the Wellcome Trust (1991-2003) managing funding programmes, including those for the developing world. From 2003 to 2008 she was head of research strategy at the faculty of medicine, Imperial College. [2]

Ewart was appointed as director of strategy for the MRC in 2008. In this position, Ewart was responsible for the development of the MRC's strategic plan "Research Changes Lives," which was introduced in June 2009.She was appointed as Deputy Chief Executive and Chief of Strategy in January 2012. [3] In this capacity she was a director of both UK Biobank and the Francis Crick Institute. [4]

Ewart retired as the Deputy Chief Executive and Chief of Strategy for the MRC in 2014. [5] She was succeeded by Dr. Jim Smith. [5] Upon her retirement, Professor Sir John Savill, the Chief Executive of the MRC said,

“Wendy Ewart has made an enormous contribution to the MRC, achieving so much in a short period of time, and she will be greatly missed. I give her my thanks for being an outstanding deputy and wish her well.” [5]

Fiona Watt British scientist

Fiona Watt, is a British scientist who is internationally known for her contributions to the field of stem cell biology. In the 1980s, when the field was in its infancy, she highlighted key characteristics of stem cells and their environment that laid the foundation for much present day research. She is currently director of the Centre for Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine at King's College London, and Executive Chair of the Medical Research Council (MRC), the first woman to lead the MRC since its foundation in 1913. On 13 July 2021 she has been appointed as the new Director of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).

Francis Crick Institute Biomedical research centre in London

The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical research centre in London, which was established in 2010 and opened in 2016. The institute is a partnership between Cancer Research UK, Imperial College London, King's College London (KCL), the Medical Research Council, University College London (UCL) and the Wellcome Trust. The institute has 1,500 staff, including 1,250 scientists, and an annual budget of over £100 million, making it the biggest single biomedical laboratory in Europe.
