As of the 2023–24 school year, the district, comprised of six schools, had an enrollment of 2,828 students and 259.2 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.9:1.[1]
History
For the 2010–11 school year, Ketler Elementary School, which had served K–4, was shifted to become Westwood Regional Middle School for grades 6 and 7, while the other elementary schools would all serve K through 5, and the high school was shifted to grades 8–12 (from 7–12).[6]
In December 2017, voters in the two municipalities approved a referendum by a 61–39% margin that would allocate $24million in bonds to be used for the construction of a 50,000-square-foot (4,600m2) expansion of Westwood Regional Middle School so that eighth grade students would be shifted from the high school and served at the middle school.[7][8]
The district had been classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "GH", the third-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.[9]
For the 2000–01 school year, Brookside Elementary School was named a "Star School" by the New Jersey Department of Education, the highest honor that a New Jersey school can achieve.[11]

Board of education
The district's board of education, comprised of nine members, sets policy and oversees the fiscal and educational operation of the district through its administration. As a Type II school district, the board's trustees are elected directly by voters to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with three seats up for election each year held (since 2012) as part of the November general election. The board appoints a superintendent to oversee the district's day-to-day operations and a business administrator to supervise the business functions of the district.[31][32] Seats on the nine-member board are allocated based on population of the constituent municipalities, with five allocated to Westwood and four to Washington Township.[33]

"Voters in the Township of Washington and in the Borough of Westwood agreed, 1,741 to 1,073, with a district proposal to spend approximately $24 million to significantly expand Westwood Regional Middle School.... Westwood was the lone K-12 district in Bergen County, and one of only two in the state, not to have a so-called 'true' middle school serving its grades 6-8 under one roof. Through the referendum, voters are buying a 50,224-square-foot, two-story expansion that includes new and renovated academic and student support spaces."
↑ Westwood Regional Middle School, FKA Architects. Accessed February 20, 2025. "As there was no Middle School in the District, the first step in the creation of the True Middle School was to realign the grades to move the seventh and eighth grades out of the Jr./Sr. High School. In doing so, the District converted one of their elementary schools into a Middle School, moving seventh grade out of the High School to form this new alignment. Sixth and seventh grade students found their home in the former Ketler Elementary School, a 47,000 sf school now named, 'Westwood Regional Middle School'. However, the ultimate transformation of the True Middle School project was yet to begin.... A lengthy analysis of the District's needs and projected enrollments created a program for the True Middle School that would mean the construction of a new, 50,000 sf addition to the existing building."
