The 2009 World U-17 Hockey Challenge was an international ice hockey tournament held in Campbell River, Courtenay, Duncan, Nanaimo, Parksville, and Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada between December 29, 2008 and January 4, 2009. The venues used for the tournament included the Strathcona Gardens in Campbell River, the Comox Valley Sports Center in Courtenay, the Cowichan Valley Arena in Duncan, the Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo, Oceanside Place in Parksville, and the Alberni Valley Multiplex in Port Alberni. Canada Ontario defeated Canada Pacific in the final to capture the gold medal for the second consecutive year, while the United States defeated Canada West to earn the bronze.

The team left the AJHL to join the BCHL midway through the 2023–24 season.

The 2009–10 BCHL season was the 48th season of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). The 17 teams of the Coastal and Interior divisions each played 60 season games. The BCHL All-Star Game was hosted by Nanaimo. The Vernon Vipers finished the regular season in 1st place overall. The Vernon Vipers defeated the Powell River Kings in 7 games to win the league championship Fred Page Cup. The Vernon Vipers then went on to defeat the AJHL championship Spruce Grove Saints in 7 games to win the Doyle Cup, before going on to win the 2010 Royal Bank Cup national championship.
The Port Alberni Bombers are a Junior ice hockey team in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League based in Port Alberni, British Columbia. The team debuted as an expansion franchise in the 2021–22 VIJHL season.
