Whitby Urban District was an urban district in the North Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974. [1] It comprised the present Whitby Town Council plus Briggswath (the present Scarborough Borough Council wards of Mayfield, Streonshalh and Whitby West Cliff, plus Briggswath). [2]
In 1974 it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972. [3] Together with Whitby Rural District it formed the northernmost half of the district of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, containing one third of the new borough's population.
The town's coat of arms was adopted with variations into the Urban District Council's coat of arms in 1935. [4] The motto on the coat of arms was Fuimus et sumus, Latin : We were, and we are. [5]

Westmorland is a historic county in North West England spanning the southern Lake District and the northern Dales. It had an administrative function from the 12th century until 1974. Between 1974 and 2023 Westmorland lay within the administrative county of Cumbria. In April 2023, Cumbria County Council was abolished and replaced with two unitary authorities, one of which, Westmorland and Furness, covers all of Westmorland, thereby restoring the Westmorland name to a top-tier administrative entity. The Scarborough & Whitby Railway was a railway line from Scarborough to Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. The line followed a difficult but scenic route along the North Yorkshire coast.
Scarborough was the name of a constituency in Yorkshire, electing Members of Parliament to the House of Commons, at two periods. From 1295 until 1918 it was a parliamentary borough consisting only of the town of Scarborough, electing two MPs until 1885 and one from 1885 until 1918. In 1974 the name was revived for a county constituency, covering a much wider area; this constituency was abolished in 1997.
The County Borough of Teesside was a short lived county borough and civil parish in the North Riding of Yorkshire geographical county, around the Teesside agglomeration. It was a 1968 merger of 7 council areas into a single district in. It was the third union of its type and the last to take place until the 1974 reform which replaced it with the wider county of Cleveland.
Whitby Rural District was a rural district governed from Whitby for its surrounding area in the North Riding of Yorkshire administrative county from 1894 to 1974. The then township of Whitby was governed by the separate Whitby Urban District. The rural district included Danby and Fylingdales.

It is in the Tees Valley mayoralty along with Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool and Darlington boroughs. Nunthorpe along with Stainton and Thornton have statutory parish councils.
