Whores (stylized as WHORES.) is an American noise rock/sludge metal band based in Atlanta, Georgia. It currently consists of vocalist and guitarist Christian Lembach, bass guitarist Casey Maxwell and drummer Douglas Jennings Barrett. The band has released two records through Brutal Panda Records and is known for its "intensely cathartic live shows". [1]

History

Whores was formed in 2010. [2] In 2011, the band released their debut EP, Ruiner, through Brutal Panda Records. [2] This was followed by the EP Clean in 2013, which received attention from music websites such as Pitchfork , [3] [4] Exclaim! , [5] and Sputnikmusic. [6] A split single with the band Rabbits, which consists of The Cure covers, were also released in 2014. [7] [8] On October 28, 2016, they released their new album Gold via eOne Music. [9]

The band has toured the United States alongside acts such as Red Fang, Melvins, Retox, Torche, The Sword, Black Tusk, Deafheaven, Floor, Kylesa, Obliterations, Iron Reagan, Fight Amp, Haan, Louisiana band Capra, and Creepoid. [10]

On February 24, 2024, the band released a new single, "Sicko", from their second studio album, War., which was released on April 12. [11]

Musical style

The band's music is mainly described as noise rock [3] [5] [6] and sludge metal. [6] [12] Pitchfork Media reviewer Andy O'Connor noted the influences of Melvins, Helmet, Karp, Pissed Jeans, and Amphetamine Reptile Records artists. [3]

The band also collaborated with many figures of the noise rock scene. The band's first EP was mastered by Harvey Milk drummer Kyle Spence [13] and their sophomore EP was produced by Ryan Boesch, who worked with various acts such as Melvins, Fu Manchu, Helmet and Foo Fighters. [5]

Alcest is a French post-black metal band from Bagnols-sur-Cèze, founded and led by Neige. It began in 2000 as a black metal solo project by Neige, then became a trio, but members Aegnor and Argoth left the band following the 2001 release of their first demo, leaving Neige as the sole member. Neige began incorporating elements of shoegaze and post-metal into the project's sound from 2005 onwards and is largely credited with pioneering the fusion genre known as blackgaze. Fuck the Facts is a Canadian Juno-nominated, grindcore band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, formed in 1998. They began as the solo recording project of musician Topon Das. Their earliest recording was in January 1997; they began using the name Fuck the Facts in 1998. After many early recordings, including split tapes with groups from around the world, Fuck the Facts began developing a name in the underground with fans of grind. In 2001, the first full-length CD-R, Discoing the Dead, was recorded. The same year, Das would assemble a full band to continue with the project. Blackgaze is a fusion genre combining elements of black metal and shoegaze. The word is a blend of the names of the two genres, described by The Guardian as "the buzz term for a new school of bands taking black metal out of the shadows and melding its blast beats, dungeon wailing and razorwire guitars with the more reflective melodies of post-rock, shoegaze and post-hardcore." Windhand is an American doom metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 2008. Currently signed to Relapse Records, Windhand released their most recent album, Eternal Return, in October 2018.

Bosse-de-Nage is an American band from San Francisco, California, United States, composed of four anonymous members. Considered a part of the blackgaze scene, the band performs an experimental black metal style that draws from post-rock, shoegaze, post-hardcore, screamo, and indie rock, with influences from Slint, Mogwai, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. AllMusic critic Gregory Heaney wrote that the band "crafts a sound that's as comfortable expanding outward as it is contracting into a suffocating mass of needling guitars and frantic drumming." The band's lyrics touch upon various subjects, such as sex, filth, bodies, perversion, and death. Their name is taken from French symbolist Alfred Jarry's book Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician; it is the name of a monkey which may or may not have been a hallucination of the narrator.

<i>Rheia</i> (album) 2016 studio album by Oathbreaker

Rheia is the third studio album by Belgian metal band Oathbreaker. The album was produced by Jack Shirley and released through independent record label Deathwish Inc. on September 30, 2016. Oathbreaker toured internationally in support of Rheia from September until December with Skeletonwitch and Iron Reagan. The title references Rhea, mother goddess in Greek mythology.
