The Wigwam, also known as the Wigwam Hotel or Wigwam Resort, is a resort hotel in Litchfield Park, Arizona which opened in 1929. [1]

History

The Wigwam Hotel originally served only as guest housing for executives of the Goodyear Tire Company when they visited their cotton farms located in the area. Goodyear executive and primary overseer of the company’s cotton production, Paul W. Litchfield, built the hotel on his land in what is now Litchfield Park. [2] [3] The hotel opened to the public for the first time on Thanksgiving Day 1929. [4]

The first building on the property was the Organization House, a meeting place for Goodyear built in 1918. The structure still stands today. [5] The hotel has since expanded into a resort with 331 rooms. The resort boasts such amenities as three golf courses, nine tennis courts, and three swimming pools.

During the Great Recession, in 2008, the property had gone bankrupt. Local businessman Jerry Colangelo, purchased the property. Colangelo’s company, JDM Partners, invested heavily in the resort making historically sensitive renovations. [4]

The Wigwam Hotel has been listed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a member of the Historic Hotels of America since 2010. [6] In 2022, the hotel was named by Historic Hotels of America as the best historic resort in the United States. [1]

Among the celebrities who have stayed in the hotel are Maya Angelou, Donald Trump, Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Newman. [7]

Golf Courses

In 1930, less than a year after the hotel opened to the public, a nine hole golf course was developed and opened at the resort. In 1935, this course was expanded to eighteen holes by VO “Red” Allen. [5]

In 1965, Robert Trent Jones was brought to the resort to design and oversee the development of the properties’ second course, as well as redesign the first course built in the 30s. These courses were renamed the “Blue” and “Gold” courses. [5] [8]

The resort’s third course, the “Red Course,” was built in 1972. [9]

The hotel's golf resort is the only 54-hole golf resort in the state of Arizona. [10]

The San Marcos Hotel is located on one of the prime corners of the original 1912 Chandler Townsite, at the northwest corner of San Marcos Place and Commonwealth Avenue and faces east onto San Marcos Plaza, the center of Chandler, Arizona. Operated by InterContinental Hotels Group's Crowne Plaze brand, the hotel is owned by Interwest Capital after having been acquired in 2013. The hotel was conceived by Dr. A.J. In 2012, Kansas-based Ottawa University confirmed that it was exploring the potential of purchasing the San Marcos hotel with the intention of converting it into a residential campus.

The Goodyear Farms Historic Cemetery is the official name given to a historic cemetery located at 3900 N Santa Fe Trail in the city of Avondale, Arizona. In the past the cemetery was known as the "Pioneer Cemetery" and also as the "Litchfield Cemetery". It is the final resting place of many Mexican migrants and Native-Americans who worked in the Goodyear Farms and the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park. The majority of the unmarked graves are of those who perished in the 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic which spread throughout the entire globe. The Pioneers' Cemetery Association (PCA) defines an "historic cemetery" as one which has been in existence for more than fifty years.

Paul W. Litchfield was an American inventor, industrialist, and author. He served as President, Chairman, and the first CEO of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the founder of the town of Litchfield Park, Arizona and the city of Goodyear, Arizona. Among his many accomplishments as chairman was the establishment of a research and development department that produced the first practical airplane tire, long-haul conveyor belts, hydraulic disc brakes for airplanes, the first pneumatic truck tire, and a bullet-sealing fuel tank for military airplanes. Litchfield was also the author of books on air power, trucks, employee relations, and business.

The Tubac Golf Resort and Spa is a historic hotel in Tubac, Arizona, on 500 acres (2.0 km2) of what was the Otero Ranch in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. It was opened as a hotel and golf resort in 1959.
