The Wijetunga cabinet was the central government of Sri Lanka led by President D. B. Wijetunga between 1993 and 1994. It was formed in May 1993 after the assassination of Wijetunga's predecessor Ranasinghe Premadasa and it ended in November 1994 when Wijetunga chose not to contest in the 1994 presidential election. The Wijetunga cabinet saw Sri Lanka's first cohabitation government following the opposition People's Alliance's victory in the 1994 general election.

Sri Lankabhimanya Dingiri Banda Wijetunga was the fourth President of Sri Lanka from 7 May 1993 to 12 November 1994, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 3 March 1989 to 7 May 1993 and the Governor of North Western province, Sri Lanka from 1988 to 1989. He was awarded Sri Lanka's highest award to a civilian Sri Lankabhimanya in 1993 by President Ranasinghe Premadasa.
The National Unity Alliance is a political alliance in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1999, the alliance ceased to exist in 2010 when its remaining members joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. However, Azath Salley subsequently assumed leadership of the party and the party is presently active.

Gaasinather Gangaser Ponnambalam was a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. Leader of the All Ceylon Tamil Congress, he was the party's presidential candidate in 1982. He was shot dead on 5 January 2000 in an assassination many suspect to be ordered by President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

The 1999 Sri Lankan provincial council election was held on 25 January 1999, 6 April 1999 and 10 June 1999 to elect members to seven provincial councils in Sri Lanka. No election was held in the eighth province, North Eastern, which had been governed directly by the national government since March 1990.
