William Richard Sadler was an American politician from Pennsylvania who represented the 18th district of the Pennsylvania Senate from 1847 to 1850. [1]
William Sadler's son,John Durbin Sadler,served as a Lieutenant in the Union Army during the American Civil War,being killed in the Battle of Antietam. [2]
The Battle of Antietam,also called the Battle of Sharpsburg,particularly in the Southern United States,took place during the American Civil War on September 17,1862,between Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union Major General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac near Sharpsburg,Maryland,and Antietam Creek. Part of the Maryland Campaign,it was the first field army–level engagement in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War to take place on Union soil. It remains the bloodiest day in American history,with a tally of 22,727 dead,wounded,or missing on both sides. Although the Union Army suffered heavier casualties than the Confederates,the battle was a major turning point in the Union's favor.
Richard Joseph Durbin is an American lawyer and politician serving as the senior United States senator from Illinois,a seat he has held since 1997. A member of the Democratic Party,Durbin is in his fifth Senate term and has served as the Senate Democratic whip since 2005 and as the Senate majority whip since 2021. Henry John Heinz III was an American businessman and politician who served as a United States senator from Pennsylvania from 1977 until his death in 1991. An heir to the Heinz family fortune,Heinz entered politics in 1971 when he won a special election to replace Robert Corbett to represent Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district. In 1976,Heinz ran to replace retiring Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott. Heinz narrowly won in the Republican primary over future Senator Arlen Specter,and defeated William Green III in the general election. Heinz won re-election in 1982 and 1988 by large margins. On April 4,1991,Heinz was killed when his plane,facing mechanical problems,collided with a helicopter inspecting the plane,killing all involved in the crash.
I Corps was the designation of three different corps-sized units in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Separate formation called the I Corps served in the Army of the Ohio/Army of the Cumberland under Alexander M. McCook from September 29,1862 to November 5,1862,in the Army of the Mississippi under George W. Morgan from January 4,1863 to January 12,1863,and in the Army of the Potomac and Army of Virginia. The first two were units of very limited life;the third was one of the most distinguished and veteran corps in the entire Union Army,commanded by very distinguished officers. The term "First Corps" is also used to describe the First Veteran Corps from 1864 to 1866.

He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and commanded a regiment and then a brigade in the Pennsylvania Reserve Division. He served as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 1st district from 1867 to 1868 and as the first Secretary of Internal Affairs of Pennsylvania from 1875 to 1879.
The 5th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment from southwestern Ohio that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War,serving in both the Eastern and Western Theaters in a series of campaigns and battles. It was noted for its holding the high ground at the center of the line at Antietam as part of Tyndale's 1st Brigade,Greene's 2nd Division of Mansfield's XII Corps.
The 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry was a Union Army cavalry regiment that served in the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Shenandoah during the American Civil War. It was formed in 1861 as the Philadelphia Light Cavalry and the 70th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers by Richard H. Rush who also served as colonel from 1861 to 1862. At the request of Major General George B. McClellan,the regiment was equipped with lances which prompted the unit to be known as "Rush's Lancers." The lances proved ineffective in battle and the regiment was issued carbine rifles in 1863. The regiment served in many of the key battles in the Eastern theater of the American Civil War and were mustered out in August 1865.

In the Democratic primary,U.S. Representative Dick Durbin emerged victorious,while state representative Al Salvi won the Republican primary. William H. Blair was a Union Army captain and company commander in the 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment,and a colonel and commander of the 179th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. After his service,he was appointed to the grade of Brevet brigadier general in recognition of his service at the Battle of Antietam.
