William Yang (born 1943) is an acclaimed social history photographer, playwright, artist and filmmaker living in Australia. [1] Born in Dimbulah, North Queensland he is a third generation Chinese Australian. [2] Yang's photography and performances span over 50 years and document the uncharted growth and influence of Sydney's gay subculture from the 1970s through to the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s and beyond. Through the media of photography and performance Yang also explores his own ethnicity as a Chinese Australian and the intersection of his ethnic background and sexuality.
Yang studied architecture at Queensland University where his interest in photography took shape. Photos of architectural detail, theatrical performance and people became the content that later defined his work, particularly performance and people. [3] [4]
In the late 1960s Yang relocated from Brisbane to Sydney, abandoned architecture studies and joined an experimental theatre company, Performance Syndicate as a playwright. [4] In the early 1970’s inspired by the Stonewall riots in New York, Yang came out as a gay man. Photography however became his metier rather than writing and actors were keen to include his photographic portraits in their portfolios. [5] While celebrity and fashion fascinated Yang, photojournalism began to preoccupy his interest. [4]
The direction of photojournalism led him to commissions with magazines hungry for images to fill their social pages. Although this paid a living, Yang considered himself more an artist than a commercial photographer. At the same time photography was increasingly recognised as an artform, its significance reinforced in Sydney with the opening of the Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) in November 1974. [6] [7] His first exhibition at ACP was in 1977, Sydneyphiles, consisting of celebrity social photos and (more controversial at the time) images of the gay community. [8]
Yang became increasingly engrossed with documenting the gay subculture surrounding Oxford Street in Sydney and switched from earning a living with commercial magazines to earning commissions from the gay press . [4] The trajectory of gay culture at this time was visibly exuberant: the Gay Mardi Gras (later the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras) a hallmark of this self-assertion; the growing political activism around civil rights; and the ravages of the HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) epidemic were all captured by Yang. [4]
Yang says of this time that there was an almost frenzied party milieu especially evident in the large RAT and Sleaze Balls that belied a sense of fatalism with the HIV/AIDS epidemic. [9] Yang has said of this time:
I see myself as a photographic witness to our time. I feel compelled to perform these slide shows as social rituals to unburden myself of the things I have seen. [2]
Documentation of the gay community brought into sharp focus his little explored ethnicity as a Chinese Australian. Embracing his Chinese ethnicity and heritage for the first time, Yang took lessons on Taoism, travelled to China and then eventually back to his home town of Dimbulah in North Queensland. [4] Such a full circle exposed Yang to the beauty and acceptance of the harsh Australian landscape entwined with recognition and pride in his Chinese heritage. The face of Buddha (1989), his first art performance, included slide projections and monologues with over-written photographic images and became the form of expression he preferred over pure photographic exhibitions. [8] In over-writing his photographic images, Yang became increasingly aware of the importance of text in communicating and personalising ideas, of placing himself within the story which could never be objective. [10]
Inspired by the autobiographical monologues of Spalding Gray, [11] Yang embarked on an international tour of his work Sadness, a ‘monologue with slide projections’, which was also developed as a film, winning several awards including the 1999 AWGIE Award for best screenplay and best documentary selected by the Australian Film Critics Circle Award. [8] [2] Increasingly known for documentaries including My Generation (2008 – stories of friends, sexuality and identity) Blood Links (1999 - stories about the Chinese in Australia including his family) and Friends of Dorothy (1998 – stories around the acceptance of sexuality, death and mourning) stemming from original performances, Grehan and Scheer contend that his performance pieces became a form of self-portraiture. [8]
In the last decade, Yang has worked closely with Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) and in collaboration with Annette Shun Wa has been instrumental in supporting Asian Australian creatives including hip hop musicians Joal Ma and James Mangohig (In between two). [11]
Sadness: A monologue with Slides – begins with Yang’s Chinese Australian heritage and is also an account of the slow death of Yang’s friends Nicolaas and Allan. [2] Its generation began when between 1988-1992, Yang realised that he had attended more wakes than parties. [10]
There are two volumes of Yang's diaries which document his photographic work - Diaries: a retrospective exhibition: 25 years of social personal and landscape photography [4] which is based on an exhibition curated by the State Library of NSW in 1998; and Sydney Diary 1974-1984 which is organised thematically with text by Yang. Yang’s archive consists of over half a million images covering almost 50 years of documenting people, places and social change. [8]
Grehan and Scheer, discuss how Yang's work can be assessed in an age of digital self-regard or the 'selfie'. [8] They suggest Yang's work resides in ‘memory…reflection and… (self) recognition’. [8] Grehan and Scheer maintain that Yang’s work is an antidote to the instantaneous production of the 'selfie' and is a form of 'slow media' associated with documentarians. [8] Although Yang also embraces digital media such as Facebook and microblogging, he still adheres to a sense of curation and narrative. [8] Yang sees his digital storytelling as a podcasting. [11]
Yang's chronicle of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 1990s depicting images of close friends in the final stages of death is, according to Helen Ennis different from early nineteenth and twentieth century post mortem photography. [13] Ennis also contrasts his publicly exhibited work to more recent depictions of death and dying using digital technology held privately by surviving loved ones. [13] She maintains that his work was done at a time when the urgency surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic within a specific demographic was both personal and political:— [13]

A retrospective exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery in 2021 (Seeing and Being Seen) chronicles the portraits, the parties, the politics, the personal and the natural. [14]
Mervyn Bishop is an Australian news and documentary photographer. Joining The Sydney Morning Herald as a cadet in 1962, he was the first Aboriginal Australian to work on a metropolitan daily newspaper and one of the first to become a professional photographer. In 1971, four years after completing his cadetship, he was named Australian Press Photographer of the Year. He has continued to work as a photographer and lecturer.
Carol Jerrems was an Australian photographer/filmmaker whose work emerged just as her medium was beginning to regain the acceptance as an art form that it had in the Pictorial era, and in which she newly synthesizes complicity performed, documentary and autobiographical image-making of the human subject, as exemplified in her Vale Street.
Olive Cotton was a pioneering Australian modernist photographer of the 1930s and 1940s working in Sydney. Cotton became a national "name" with a retrospective and touring exhibition 50 years later in 1985. A book of her life and work, published by the National Library of Australia, came out in 1995. Cotton captured her childhood friend Max Dupain from the sidelines at photoshoots, e.g. "Fashion shot, Cronulla Sandhills, circa 1937" and made several portraits of him. Dupain was Cotton's first husband.
Julie Rrap is an Australian contemporary artist who was raised on the Gold Coast in Queensland. She was born Julie Parr, and reversed her name to express her sense of opposition. Since the mid-1970's she has worked in photography, painting, sculpture, video and performance. Julie's work expresses her interest in images of the body, especially the female body.
The Australian Queer Archives (AQuA) is a community-based non-profit organisation committed to the collection, preservation and celebration of material reflecting the lives and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex LGBTI Australians. It is located in Melbourne. The Archives was established as an initiative of the 4th National Homosexual Conference, Sydney, August 1978, drawing on the previous work of founding President Graham Carbery. Since its establishment the collection has grown to over 200,000 items, constituting the largest and most significant collection of material relating to LGBT Australians and the largest collection of LGBT material in Australia, and the most prominent research centre for gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex history in Australia.
Reynolds Mark Ellis was an Australian social and social documentary photographer. He also worked, at various stages of his life, as an advertising copywriter, seaman, lecturer, television presenter and founder of Brummels Gallery of Photography, Australia's first dedicated photography gallery, where he established both a photographic studio and an agency dedicated to his work, published 17 photographic books, and held numerous exhibitions in Australia and overseas.
John Ranard was a social documentary photographer who won critical acclaim for his gritty, multi-layered photographs of Louisville, Kentucky's social classes, the world of boxing, Russia during the period of perestroika, AIDS in Russia and Russian prison life.
AIDS photo diary, 1986–1990 is an art work that comprises a photo diary that records the decline in health and eventual death of David Tosh, from AIDS from 1986 to 1990 in Sydney, Australia. The diary – with accompanying photographs taken by John Jenner – was created by Jenner to remember his friend and honour the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. Some of the images were featured in an article in Sydney Morning Herald's Good Weekend magazine, 13 October 1990, pp. 20–29.
Gideon Mendel is a South African photographer, based in London. His work engages with contemporary social issues of global concern. It was his work as a 'struggle photographer' during the final years of apartheid in the 1980s that first brought attention to his work.

Sandra Edwards is an Australian photographer. Edwards specialises in documentary photography and photographic curation. Born in Bluff, New Zealand in 1948 Edwards arrived in Sydney in 1961. Edwards was at the forefront of a group of progressive photographers in the 1970s and 80s who were driven to create documentary work that recorded social conditions and had the intent to change these conditions. Edwards' work largely drew from feminist ideals and the media's representation of women as well as the portrayal of Aboriginal communities in Australia.
John Chester Cato was an Australian photographer and teacher. Cato started his career as a commercial photographer and later moved towards fine-art photography and education. Cato spent most of his life in Melbourne, Australia.

Lola Flash is an American photographer whose work has often focused on social, LGBT and feminist issues. An active participant in ACT UP during the time of the AIDS epidemic in New York City, Flash was notably featured in the 1989 "Kissing Doesn't Kill" poster.
C. Moore Hardy , is an Australian photographer, nurse and community worker, known for her extensive photographic documentation of the Sydney queer community since the late 1970s. Hardy's work has encompassed both freelance and commercial photography, featuring candid portraiture of community events, most notably the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and in particular minority groups within the LGBTI community. She successfully ran Starfish Studio Photography Studio/Gallery in Clovelly, NSW for 15 years. Hardy held a major exhibition of over three decades of her documentation of Sydney's LGBTQ+ scene at the National Art School in Sydney.
Philip Quirk is an Australian photographer, photojournalist and educationist, known for his specialist imagery of landscape, geographic and documentary photography, and as a founding member of the Wildlight agency.
Graham S. Burstow was an Australian photographer. He is known both for his photographic practice and for his service to organisations and photographic competitions, for which he received a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2004. He exhibited widely, both in Australia and overseas, and three photographic books were published that were devoted to his work.
