The Montreal Alouettes are a professional Canadian football team based in Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 1946, the team has folded and been revived twice. The Alouettes compete in the East Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and last won the Grey Cup in 2023, defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 110th Grey Cup Game in 2023. Their home field is Percival Molson Memorial Stadium for the regular season and as of 2014 also home of their playoff games.

Popp served as General Manager for two years for Baltimore Stallions, and the Director of Player Personnel for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. As a CFL general manager, three separate franchises under Popp have won five Grey Cup championship wins out of 11 appearances.

The Alouettes finished the season in third place in the East Division with a 7–11 record. Although this was a slight improvement upon their 6–12 record from 2015, it was still not good enough to get them back into the playoffs, as they lost the season series to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and thus, having to settle for 3rd place, behind the "crossover" team from the West, the Edmonton Eskimos (10–8). It was the first time the team missed the playoffs in back-to-back years since their reactivation.

This was a rematch of the 2002 FA Cup Final and the first final since 2003 in which the sides had won once in the Premier League against one another, with a 3–0 victory for Arsenal in September 2016, and a 3–1 win for Chelsea the following February. The game was broadcast live in the United Kingdom by both BBC and BT Sport. BBC One provided the free-to-air coverage and BT Sport 2 was the pay-TV alternative.

He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Minnesota Twins and Miami Marlins, and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
