Wilson Sossion

Wilson Sossion is a Kenyan legislator and teacher who as of 2021 is a nominated Member of Parliament representing workers interest in Kenya's National Assembly. [1] Politically he is affiliated to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He also served as the Secretary General of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) from 2013 to 2021. [2]

Background and education

Sossion was born and raised in Kenya in 1969 in Pokot county, and is a member of Tulin clan. [3] His family later moved to Bomet county in the 1970s. [4] He graduated from Egerton University with Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. [5] He later joined Kenya National Union of Teachers in 2013 taking over from David Osiany [6] He attended the great Kericho High School in Kericho County alongside other dignitaries.

Career

Teaching and KNUT

Sossion started his career as a teacher in 1993 at Tenwek High School in Bomet. [3] In 2000, Sossion vied for the position of Executive Secretary for the Bomet branch of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) but he lost. [7] He vied again in 2001 and won. Shortly after that, he was elected to the National Union Council where he was exposed to matters policy and decision-making. [3] In 2007, he contested for the post of second vice national chairman of KNUT and won. He later vied for the position of chair and was elected unopposed. He rose to the position of National chair position and in 2013, members asked him to serve as Secretary General of the same organization. [8] Having served as Secretary General for KNUT for eight years, Sossion resigned in June 2021. He indicated that he wanted to focus on legislative duties [9]

Politics

In 2017, he was nominated to the Kenya National Assembly by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party to represent workers' interests.

David Kimutai Too was a Kenyan politician affiliated to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He was a high school teacher and then a principal from Kericho in Rift Valley, Kenya before being elected to the National Assembly from Ainamoi Constituency from a field of 13 candidates in the December 2007 parliamentary election. Charles Keter, a fellow Member of Parliament, described Too as "a very humble, quiet man." The "List of alleged perpetrators" of the 2007/2008 post-electoral violence of the Kenya National Human Rights Commission however lists him among the suspects on place 3 and charges him with "planning, incitement, and financing the violence".

Kipkalya Kiprono Kones was a Kenyan politician who served as a minister during the 1990s and was briefly Minister of Roads in 2008. He was a member of the National Assembly of Kenya from 1988 to 2008.

Lorna Chepkemoi Laboso was a Kenyan Politician born in Kericho District of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). She was briefly a Member of Parliament and Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Vice Presidents Office in 2008.

Peter Anyang' Nyong'o is a Kenyan politician and author who is the Governor of Kisumu County. He is a former Secretary-General of Orange Democratic Movement. Professor Nyong'o was the acting party leader from March 11 until late May when Raila Odinga was in the United States and was elected to the National Assembly of Kenya in the December 2007 parliamentary election, representing the Kisumu Rural Constituency. Reliable sources says that He will be contesting for the Kericho County Gubernatorial seat in 2022, seeking to succeed Prof. Paul chepkwony.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is the largest teachers' trade union in Kenya. It was formed on December 4, 1957. Its first secretary-general was Joseph Kioni. The union held its first strike in 1963, soon before Kenyan independence. Other major strikes have been held in 1966, 1969, 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2009.

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is a political party that was founded in 1999 by politicians who were at the time considederd to be renegades from the then ruling party Kenya African National Union but was denied registration by the then head of state Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi and most of its then leaders went to other parties by the time of the 2002 general elections.

She was the Women Representative for Busia county for two terms, from August 2013 to August 2022. Under the reign of the fourth president of Kenya, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. She served the two terms through Orange Democratic Movement. In the latest Kenyan election, the 2022 general election, she vied for the governor seat though she lost it to Paul Otuoma. Mutua is the only woman to vie for the gubernatorial race in Busia during the 2022 general election. If she had won, she would have become the first woman governor in Busia county.
