Winston Jessurun (born 5 April 1952) is a Surinamese politician and plastic surgeon. [1] [2] He was member of the National Assembly for the Democratic Alternative '91 between 1991 and 2015 for Paramaribo District. [3]
Jessurun was born on 5 April 1952 in Coronie District. [4] The party Democratic Alternative '91 (DA'91) was founded in 1991 when it split off from the National Party of Suriname. [5] Jessurun was one of the founders,together with Gerard Brunings. [1] Jessurun contested the 1991 Surinamese general election for the DA'91 and won a seat. He served five more terms. [5]
For the 2010 elections Jessurun and the DA'91 joined the political alliance New Front for Democracy and Development. [6] For the 2015 elections Jessurun was named the top candidate on the party list. [5] He and the DA'91 entered the elections as part of the political alliance V7. [5] He was not re-elected. [7] On 30 September 2015 he was succeeded as chairperson of Democratic Alternative '91 by Angelic Alihusain-del Castilho. Jessurun became honorary chairperson. [8]
DesiréDelano Bouterse is a Surinamese military officer,politician,convicted murderer and drug trafficker who served as President of Suriname from 2010 to 2020. From 1980 to 1987,he was Suriname's de facto leader after conducting a military coup and establishing a period of military rule. In 1987,Bouterse founded the National Democratic Party (NDP). On 25 May 2010,Bouterse's political alliance,the Megacombinatie,which included the NDP,won the parliamentary elections,and on 19 July 2010,Bouterse was elected as President of Suriname with 36 of 50 parliament votes. Simons is the second female chairman of the Surinamese Parliament. She was re-elected on 30 June 2015. She announced her retirement on 20 June 2020.
The 1980 Surinamese coup d'état,usually referred to as the Sergeants' Coup,was a military coup in Suriname which occurred on 25 February 1980,when a group of 16 sergeants of the Surinamese Armed Forces (SKM) led by Dési Bouterse overthrew the government of Prime Minister Henck Arron with a violent coup d'état. This marked the beginning of the military dictatorship that dominated the country from 1980 until 1991. The dictatorship featured the presence of an evening curfew,the lack of freedom of press,a ban on political parties,a restriction on the freedom of assembly,a high level of government corruption and the summary executions of political opponents.

Jennifer Victorine van Dijk-Silos is a Surinamese politician of the National Democratic Party. She was Minister of Justice and Police between August 2015 and March 2017. Van Dijk-Silos served as chair of the Onafhankelijk Kiesbureau between 2004 and 2015 and once more from 2018 to 2020.
