The Wm. J. Cassidy Tire Building was a building at 344 N. Canal Street, Chicago, Illinois. Designed by Henry J. Schlacks and constructed in 1902, it originally served as a factory and warehouse for the Tyler & Hippach Mirror Co. [4] [1] [5]

Contents

The site was purchased for redevelopment in February 2022, with demolition commencing shortly afterward. An apartment tower was erected on the site. [6]

History

The building originally stood at 117–125 N. Clinton Street. [1] In 1907, it was sold to the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. [7] [2] In 1908, the building was moved 52 feet south and 168 feet east to its current location, [a] in order to make way for the construction of the new Chicago and North Western Terminal, at a cost of $50,000. [4] [1] [10] [11] The William Grace Company was contracted to perform the move, and hired Chicago engineer Harvey Sheeler, who had successfully moved several large buildings previously. [4] [1] [10] At the time, this was the largest building ever moved. [1]

In 1929, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad began leasing the building to Producers Warehouse. [3] In 1947, the building was sold to the owner of Producers Warehouse for $75,000. [3] William J. Cassidy Tire & Auto Supply Co. purchased the building for $250,000 in 1970, and it became the headquarters of Cassidy Tire. [12] [13]

In 2019, The Habitat Company signed a contract to purchase the property, with intent to demolish the building and build a 33 story apartment building on the site. [1] [5] [14] However, Preservation Chicago fought to have the building designated a Chicago Landmark and preserved as part of the residential development planned for the site. [1] [4] In February 2021, Preservation Chicago listed the Wm. J. Cassidy Tire Building as one of Chicago's most endangered buildings. [15] [16]

Demolition began in March 2022, followed by groundbreaking that October. [17] [18] The new apartment complex, dubbed "Cassidy on Canal", was finished in 2024. Some of the original bricks of the Wm. J. Cassidy Tire Building were incorporated into the design. [19]

The modern building occupies two square city blocks, bounded by Randolph Street and Madison Street to the north and south and by Canal Street and Clinton Street to the east and west. It is the second busiest rail station in Chicago, after nearby Union Station, the sixth-busiest railway station in North America, and the third-busiest station that exclusively serves commuter traffic.

19 Dutch is a residential building in the Financial District neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The building was developed by Carmel Partners and was designed by GK+V, with SLCE Architects as the architect of record. GK+V also designed the nearby 5 Beekman. The building contains 482 units and retail space on the first several floors. In February 2018, Carmel began leasing out the 97 affordable apartments. Carmel placed the building for sale in 2022, and Amancio Ortega, the founder of Zara, agreed in July 2022 to buy 19 Dutch via his holding firm Pontegadea for about $500 million.

The Archer Daniels Midland Wheat Mill was a plant in Chicago's Fulton Market District. The complex included brick loft buildings, a grain elevator, and silos. The oldest buildings in the complex were built in 1897 and were designed by William Carbys Zimmerman and John J. Flanders. It originally served as Eckhart & Swan's wheat and rye mill.

Preservation Chicago is a historic preservation advocacy group in Chicago, Illinois, which formally commenced operations on October 23, 2001. The organization was formed by a group of Chicagoans who had assembled the previous year to save a group of buildings which included Coe Mansion, which had once housed Ranalli's pizzeria and The Red Carpet, a French restaurant that had been frequented by Jack Benny and Elizabeth Taylor. Other preservation campaigns that were instrumental in the founding of Preservation Chicago included St. Boniface Church, the Scherer Building, and the New York Life Insurance Building.
