Womanifesto an international art exchange program based in Thailand. It is a biannual artist-initiated event focusing on the work of women artists from around the world. Womanifesto has gained international recognition and developed steadily since the first event in 1995. Through various activities, including art exhibitions, workshops and seminars, Womanifesto develops networks among participating artists and encourages interaction within urban and rural communities. [1] The initiative offers a way to rethink feminist, nation-centric, and region-centric narratives of art history. [2]
"Between 1997 and 2008, the feminist biennial Womanifesto in Thailand sought to create networks in art and activism that enacted gender equity and socio-economic justice at a time when biennials in Asia were taking shape," writes Emily Verla Bovino in Ocula Magazine, reporting on Womanifesto's efforts, as charted by Asia Art Archive in an exhibition in Hong Kong in 2020. [1]
In October–November 2019, the Cross Art Projects, a nonprofit curatorial initiative based in Sydney, presented an exhibition titled Archiving Womanifesto: An International Art Exchange, 1990s–Present, where artists Varsha Nair, Nitaya Ueareeworakul, Phaptawan Suwannakudt acted as curators. [3] In July–November 2020, Asia Art Archive, a nonprofit arts organization based in Hong Kong, hosted an exhibition about the history of Womanifesto and the role of pedagogy in this initiative. [4]
In 1995, a group of women artists, writers and activists from Thailand organized a feminist art exhibition titled Tradisexion at Concrete House, an alternative art space in Bangkok. The exhibition featured paintings, installations, and performances by women artists from Thailand. [5] 1995 also marked the year for the World Conference on Women, organized by the United Nations, which was crucial in the history of feminism as governments from different parts of the world agreed on a plan for global legal equality for women.
Womanifesto I presented an exhibition held at Concrete House and Baan Chao Phraya (Chaiyong Limtongkul Foundation). It was organized by artists Nitaya Ueareeworakul, Acharn Somporn Rodboon, Varsha Nair, and Ark Fongsamut, and featured eighteen artists from ten countries, including Nilofar Akmut, Amanda Heng, Arahmaiani, Pinaree Sanpitak, and Phaptawan Suwannakudt. [4]
In 1999, Womanifesto II was held at Saranrom Park, Bangkok. Featuring installations and performances across the park, this edition presented more than thirty participants such as Sanja Iveković, Mella Jaarsma, Sriwan Janehattakarnkit, and Jittima Pholsawek, and it was organized by Nitaya Ueareeworakul, Pantini Chamnianwai and Studio Xang. The format of the Womanifesto events has changed with the later iterations. In 2001, Womanifesto organizers held a ten-day workshop with a group of thirteen artists, including Lawan Jirasuradej, Yin Xiuzhen, Karla Sachse, and Hiroko Inoue, at Boon Bandarn Farm in Sisaket, in the Isan region. The participants were asked to think together about the position of women in the rural community and how women passed on knowledge across generations. [6] This edition was organized by Preenun Nana, Varsha Nair, Naomi Urabe, Nitaya Ueareeworakul, and Pan Parahom. The participating artists learned skills from local craftspeople, such as basketry and weaving; organized workshops for local students; and developed projects with the locals, such as building a kiln. [4]
In 2003, Procreation/Postcreation was produced as a publication with an open call to artists and non-artists, including male and female individuals or collectives. It was organized by Preenun Nana and Varsha Nair. Featuring eighty-eight contributions, the publication was created in the form of a box and collected personal stories, recipes, and poems, among others. [7] In the same year, Womanifesto website was launched. [6]
In 2005–06, Womanifesto organizers created the website project exploring nationalism. Titled No Man's Land, this project was organised by Varsha Nair and Katherine Olston, with Keiko Sei as an advisor. It was funded by Heinrich Boell Foundation. It presented works by seventy-five participants from across the world. [6]
In 2008–09, Womanifesto organizers held an artist-in-residence program at Boon Bandan Farm, which deepened their involvement with nearby communities. This one-month-long residency allowed artists to develop projects over time and showed how contemporary artistic practice could interact with traditional crafts and involve local groups at the same time . [4] It was organised by Varsha Nair, Nitaya Ueareeworakul, Phaptawan Suwannakudt, and supported by Office of Contemporary Art, Ministry of Culture, Thailand.
LA Freewaves, also known as Freewaves, is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization that exhibits new, uncensored, independent media, and produces free public art projects to engage artists and audiences on current social issues. Anne Bray, with representatives of other communities, founded LA Freewaves in 1989 and has worked to administer the non-profit since it was launched as an exhibition of multicultural video art at the American Film Institute's National Video Festival. Bray serves as director of the organization and has been working in the field of media arts since the mid-1970s as an artist and teacher.
The feminist art movement in the United States began in the early 1970s and sought to promote the study, creation, understanding and promotion of women's art. First-generation feminist artists include Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro, Suzanne Lacy, Judith Bernstein, Sheila de Bretteville, Mary Beth Edelson, Carolee Schneeman, Rachel Rosenthal, and many other women. They were part of the Feminist art movement in the United States in the early 1970s to develop feminist writing and art. The movement spread quickly through museum protests in both New York and Los Angeles, via an early network called W.E.B. that disseminated news of feminist art activities from 1971 to 1973 in a nationally circulated newsletter, and at conferences such as the West Coast Women's Artists Conference held at California Institute of the Arts and the Conference of Women in the Visual Arts, at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C..

Asia Art Archive (AAA) is a nonprofit organisation based in Hong Kong which focuses on documenting the recent history of contemporary art in Asia within an international context. AAA incorporates material that members of local art communities find relevant to the field, and provides educational and public programming. AAA is one of the most comprehensive publicly accessible collections of research materials in the field. In activating its collections, AAA initiates public, educational, and residency programmes. AAA also offers research grants and publishes articles on IDEAS Journal.
"Where We At" Black Women Artists, Inc. (WWA) was a collective of Black women artists affiliated with the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It included artists such as Dindga McCannon, Kay Brown, Faith Ringgold, Carol Blank, Jerri Crooks, Charlotte Kâ (Richardson), and Gylbert Coker. Where We At was formed in the spring of 1971, in the wake of an exhibition of the same name organized by 14 Black women artists at the Acts of Art Gallery in Greenwich Village. Themes such as the unity of the Black family, Black female independence and embodiment, Black male-female relationships, contemporary social conditions, and African traditions were central to the work of the WWA artists. The group was intended to serve as a source of empowerment for African-American women, providing a means for them to control their self-representation and to explore issues of Black women's sensibility and aesthetics. Like AfriCobra, a Chicago-based Black Arts group, the WWA was active in fostering art within the African-American community and using it as a tool of awareness and liberation. The group organized workshops in schools, jails and prisons, hospitals, and cultural centers, as well as art classes for youth in their communities.
The Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative is a five-year program, supported by Swiss bank UBS in which the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation identifies and works with artists, curators and educators from South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa to expand its reach in the international art world. For each of the three phases of the project, the museum invites one curator from the chosen region to the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York City for a two-year curatorial residency, where they work with a team of Guggenheim staff to identify new artworks that reflect the range of talents in their parts of the world. The resident curators organize international touring exhibitions that highlight these artworks and help organize educational activities. The Foundation acquires these artworks for its permanent collection and includes them as the focus of exhibitions that open at the museum in New York and subsequently travel to two other cultural institutions or other venues around the world. The Foundation supplements the exhibitions with a series of public and online programs, and supports cross-cultural exchange and collaboration between staff members of the institutions hosting the exhibitions. UBS is reportedly contributing more than $40 million to the project to pay for its activities and the art acquisitions. Foundation director Richard Armstrong commented: "We are hoping to challenge our Western-centric view of art history."
Ellen Pau is an artist, curator and researcher based in Hong Kong. She is also co-founder of Videotage and founding artistic director of the Microwave International New Media Arts Festival. The artist's first retrospective exhibition in Hong Kong was organized by Para Site in 2018. The exhibition included major video installations ranging from the 1980s to the present.
Ginger Brooks Takahashi is an American artist based in Brooklyn, New York, and North Braddock, Pennsylvania. A self-identified “punk,” Takahashi grew up in Oregon. She co-founded the feminist genderqueer collective and journal LTTR and the Mobilivre project, a touring exhibition and library. She was also a member of MEN (band). Her work consists of a collaborative project-based practice. Takahashi is currently an adjunct professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University.
Kathy Rae Huffman is an American curator, writer, producer, researcher, lecturer and expert for video and media art. Since the early 1980s, Huffman is said to have helped establish video and new media art, online and interactive art, installation and performance art in the visual arts world. She has curated, written about, and coordinated events for numerous international art institutes, consulted and juried for festivals and alternative arts organisations. Huffman not only introduced video and digital computer art to museum exhibitions, she also pioneered tirelessly to bring television channels and video artists together, in order to show video artworks on TV. From the early 1990s until 2014, Huffman was based in Europe, and embraced early net art and interactive online environments, a curatorial practice that continues. In 1997, she co-founded the Faces mailing list and online community for women working with art, gender and technology. Till today, Huffman is working in the US, in Canada and in Europe.
Jaishri Abichandani is a Brooklyn-based artist and curator. Her interdisciplinary practice focuses on the intersection of art, feminism, and social practice. Abichandani was the founder of the South Asian Women's Creative Collective, with chapters in New York City and London, and director from 1997 until 2013. She was also the Founding Director of Public Events and Projects from at the Queens Museum from 2003-2006.
The mission statement of the South Asian Women's Creative Collective (SAWCC) states: "SAWCC has served South Asian women since 1997 and has earned a reputation for showcasing cutting-edge work that deals intelligently with issues of gender and cultural representation. It is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to the advancement, visibility, and development of emerging and established South Asian women artists and creative professionals by providing a physical and virtual space to profile their creative and intellectual work across disciplines." SAWCC has no membership dues and is entirely volunteer-driven.
Para Site is an independent, non-profit art space based in Hong Kong. It was founded in 1996 by artists Patrick Lee, Leung Chi-wo, Phoebe Man Ching-ying, Sara Wong Chi-hang, Leung Mee-ping, Tsang Tak-ping and Lisa Cheung. It produces exhibitions, public programmes, residencies, conferences and educational initiatives that aim to develop a critical understanding of local and international contemporary art.
EVA International is a large-scale contemporary art exhibition that takes place every two years in the city of Limerick, Republic of Ireland. It is known as Ireland's biennial, and is held in even-numbered years.
Varsha Nair is an Indian artist born in Kampala, Uganda.
Salon Natasha was Vietnam’s first private contemporary art space established in 1990 by the late artist Vũ Dân Tân (1946–2009) and his Russian wife Natalia (Natasha) Kraevskaia. Situated in their home and Vu Dan Tan’s studio at 30 Hang Bong, Hanoi, it functioned outside of the legal framework and was free from any official interference. It was the first venue in Hanoi to exhibit young, experimental and non-commercial artists, as well as a meeting spot for creative people and intellectuals. Proclaiming its main goal as freedom of expression, during its almost two decades of activities, Salon Natasha has organized around one hundred artistic events extending from curated exhibitions to creative collaborations, spontaneous performances and international exchanges. Many of the country’s leading contemporary artists started their career at Salon Natasha.
The Feminist Art Coalition (FAC) is a collaboration of over 100 art museums and nonprofit institutions from across the United States. The organizations are collectively creating a series of programming and exhibitions centered around feminist thought to be held beginning in the fall of 2020, during the run-up of the presidential election. The project was initially planned to occur from September through November 2020, but has been extended through the end of 2021 due to changes in exhibition schedules resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tari Ito was a Japanese performance artist, activist, and organizer based in Tokyo who presented her work in Japan and Asia, North America, and Europe. She was one of the few out lesbian artists in Japan.
Xiaoyu Weng (翁笑雨) is a Chinese curator, writer, editor and educator in the area of contemporary art.
Odile Burluraux is a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, Paris (MAM), organizing large group shows at the institution that have included international artists since the 1990s. She started as an intern at MAM, curating her first exhibition in 1995, working with musician Arnold Schoenberg's paintings.
Phaptawan Suwannakudt is a Thai artist based in Sydney and Bangkok. She primarily works with traditional Thai mural painting, and has been involved in numerous public projects and a series of individual artworks. She has long been interested in art as a means to connect and empathise with people through the process of storytelling. Through art, Phaptawan desires to reach beyond the limitations of language, identity, and temporality to promote intimate communication with individuals. Her works are exhibited widely in Australia, Thailand, and internationally through solo and group exhibitions. She was one of the co-founding artists of Womanifesto, an international art exchange program focusing on women artists, founded in Thailand in 1995.
