Woob2 4495 is the second full-length album from Woob, the stage name of ambient musician Paul Frankland. It was released in the UK on em:t records on 21 September 1995.

While not generally regarded by ambient music fans to be as cohesive or ground-breaking as its predecessor, Woob 1194 , Woob2 4495 still contains material reckoned to be among the best ambient music released in the 1990s – particularly the 25-minute-long "Depart", and the album's closer, "Later". [2] It also contains the shortest Woob track to date, the 33-second long "Cupboard", which is made up of elements of "Depart". The album also makes less use of vocal samples than 1194, instead using organic sounds such as hand-claps and heartbeats.
Frankland himself was dissatisfied with the album; in a 1998 interview, he said: "Woob² did not quite live up to my expectations. On a compilation I had a track where the band really played together with guitar, drums and bass. I wanted the second Woob album to really sound "live", but that was not possible". [3] More recently, in 2009, he stated "the second was a lot more structured, with mostly predefined arrangements", lacking the spontanteity and serendipity that defined the first album. [4]
The album's cover (like all em:t releases of the 1990s, a digipak), shows a keel-billed toucan. Unusually for an em:t release, however, the sleeve folded out, to reveal two cartoon-like illustrations.
Two tracks recorded during the 4495 sessions ended up on em:t compilation CDs – one that emerged before the album itself was released, and one after. These are "Fourteen Thirty Three" featured on Em:t 2295, and "Mould", (which makes use of samples taken from the film Sex, Lies, and Videotape ), which featured on Em:t 5595. Elements of "Mould" would be re-used on the track "Stranger Air", on the Repurpose album.
On 1 May 2010, it was announced via Paul Frankland's blog that a new Woob album, Repurpose, [5] would be released. It finally emerged on 27 May. Repurpose contains two tracks that are reworked versions of tracks from 4495 – "Nylon", a new remix of "Later", and "Departure", a remixed and shortened version of "Depart". It also contains samples of other Woob tracks from various em:t releases and compilation albums.
Repurpose was released in three forms: 25 numbered first edition CDs, 150 second edition CDs, and as a download on soundcloud; and eventually on the iTunes music store.
Though not as lauded as the first Woob album, the reputation of 4495 remains high. [6] [7] The Ambient Music Guide website describes the album as a "surreal journey, this time though some deep, dark tropical jungle teeming with life, an aural travelogue filled simultaneously with visions of beauty and lurking, unseen menace", adding that the mix of electronics and live instrumentation is "quietly dazzling". [7]
In common with many other em:t releases, 4495 is highly sought after by ambient music fans, and copies can fetch over £50 on eBay (with pristine, shrink-wrapped copies fetching as high as £125). So far, 4495 has not been re-released, though some of the tracks are now available as name-your-price downloads from the official Woob website (with one track, "Tillstand", being a remix of "Gate", another track, "Pondlife," was also made available). More recently, in June 2020, the 2nd track of Woob2 4495, Pondlife, was used in the analog horror web series Gemini Home Entertainment , specifically in the eighth episode Sleep Image Visualizer.
Shortly after he completed work on his second Journeyman album, Frankland planned a third Woob album as a follow-up to 4495, to be released on em:t. [3] However, financial problems at em:t prevented this, and work on the album was never begun. 4495 proved to be Frankland's last full-length Woob album for em:t records, although subsequent Woob material would be released on various compilations until the collapse of the em:t label in 1998. More than a decade would elapse before any new Woob material would emerge, with the release of the download-only track "Unknown Quantity" in January 2010.
In September 2010, Frankland stated on his blog that a Woob soundtrack album, entitled Paradigm Flux, was to be released, following a collaboration with the artist and film-maker Samuel Cockedey. Confusingly, this followed an announcement that the forthcoming album from Frankland's Max and Harvey project would be known as Woob3. [5]
In November 2011, Frankland issued Return to the City, a soundtrack album for the film of the same name. Whilst not formally constituting the third Woob album, the album is the first album of all-new Woob material since 4495. It was released as a limited edition keycard with extra tracks via Frankland's website, then subsequently on iTunes.
On 21 November 2012, Frankland finally released the album Have Landed (also known as Woob3) via his Season 9 website, in a variety of formats. The album combines material from both Frankland's Max and Harvey project, as well as new Woob material. The album is branded with a new Woob logo. The album also features production by Tom Smyth, who was involved in many of the original em:t releases, and contributions from Riad Abji, who provided much of the live instrumentation on 4495.
On 13 September 2013 the official third Woob album, titled Ultrascope or Woob 1113, was released, almost 18 years after 4495.
Download is a Canadian electronic music group formed by Dwayne Goettel and Kevin Crompton of Skinny Puppy in 1994. The initial lineup also included Off & Gone's Phil Western and Mark Spybey of Dead Voices on Air, but has since been particularly fluid, with Key and Western being the only constant members following Goettel's death. Download's music has been described as post-industrial, drawing from the band's genesis as part of Skinny Puppy but also sharing common stylistic ground with such artists as Aphex Twin and Autechre. The primary instrumentation common throughout their albums is a blend of synthesizers and sampled instruments; the music is particularly centered on elements of percussion and rhythm.
The Future Sound of London is a British electronic music duo composed of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans. They have been described as a "boundary-pushing" electronic act, covering techno, ambient, house music, trip hop, psychedelia, and dub.
Geir Aule Jenssen is a Norwegian electronic musician and composer who records as Biosphere. A resident of Tromsø within the Arctic Circle, Jenssen is well known for ambient and ambient house pieces, often inspired by Arctic or mountain settings, and his use of loops and peculiar samples from science fiction and natural sources. His 1997 album Substrata was voted by the users of the Hyperreal.org website in 2001 as the best all-time classic ambient album. He has also composed several film scores.
The Siket Disc is the eighth studio album by the American rock band Phish. The album was released in June 1999 through the band's website and mail-order service, and was released commercially by Elektra Records on November 7, 2000. Unlike Phish's other records, The Siket Disc is completely instrumental, and its songs are excerpts from studio jams recorded during the sessions for The Story of the Ghost.
The Golden Palominos were an American musical group headed by drummer, producer, arranger and composer Anton Fier, first formed in 1981. Aside from Fier, the Palominos membership has been wildly elastic, with only bassist Bill Laswell and guitarist Nicky Skopelitis appearing on every album through 1996. Their final work, 2012's A Good Country Mile features vocalist Kevn Kinney. The band's early work developed out of the No Wave scene, but later branched out into alternative rock, country rock and electronic music.
Amber is the second studio album by English electronic music duo Autechre, released on 7 November 1994 by Warp. It was the first Autechre album to be composed entirely of new material, as their debut album Incunabula (1993) was a compilation of older tracks.
Bark Psychosis are an English post-rock band/musical project from east London formed in 1986. They were one of the bands that Simon Reynolds cited when coining "post-rock" as a musical style in 1994, and are thus considered one of the key bands defining the genre.
Signify is the fourth studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree. It was released in September 1996 and later re-released in 2003 with a second disc of demos, which had previously been released on the b-side cassette tape Insignificance, and a third time, on vinyl, on 9 May 2011. It was the first album that frontman Steven Wilson recorded with the band on board from the beginning; previous albums had been essentially solo efforts with occasional help from other musicians.
Controlled Bleeding was an experimental music group based in Massapequa, New York. The group was founded by Paul Lemos, the group's only consistent member. Most of Controlled Bleeding's released recordings feature two main collaborators, Chris Moriarty and vocalist Joe Papa, who both died in the late 2000s. In February 2020 Lemos announced that the band had dissolved.
Em:t Records was a British record label, based in Nottingham, which specialized in ambient electronic music. They were active from 1994 to 1998, and after a period of bankruptcy, re-established themselves in 2003 under new ownership and management. In summer 2006, the label officially ceased operations again.
The Advantage is an American rock band from Sacramento, California that formed in 1998 and specialises in doing covers of music from old NES games, also known as Nintendocore. The band is named after the NES joystick controller of the same name.
Woob 1194 is the debut album of British musician Paul "Woob" Frankland. It was recorded over the span of two months and was released in the summer of 1994 on Em:t Records. It was also re-released in late 1994 on Instinct Records in the United States. It was Em:t's second release.
Pomme Fritz is a mini-album by English electronic music group The Orb, released on 13 June 1994 by Island Records. Produced to sustain the group during a period of mismanagement, it was their first album with German producer Thomas Fehlmann, as well as their last with input from Kris Weston, who appears in a much diminished role as engineer.
The Orb are an English electronic music group founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty. Known for their psychedelic sound, the Orb developed a cult following among clubbers "coming down" from drug-induced highs. Their influential 1991 debut album The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld pioneered the UK's nascent ambient house movement, while its UK chart-topping follow-up U.F.Orb represented the group's commercial peak.
Harry and the Potters are an American wizard rock band formed in Norwood, Massachusetts in 2002 by brothers Joe and Paul DeGeorge. They have released three studio albums, three singles, three extended plays, four other albums, five miscellaneous releases and two side projects. All material has been released by the independent record label Eskimo Laboratories which the duo founded.
Woob is the stage name of Paul Frankland, an English ambient musician who started recording in the early 1990s. Woob's albums combine elements of ambient, downtempo and space music, with samples from field recordings, movies and television. Frankland has also recorded under the names of Journeyman and Max & Harvey. After a period working in the advertising industry, he started releasing new material as Woob in 2010: after that time, Woob's works have gradually shifted towards a more synthwave-oriented sound and adopted a cyberpunk/futuristic imagery.
Lucid Dreams 0096 is a 1996 ambient album, on the em:t label. It is credited to "0096", but this is merely the sequential catalogue number of the disc, labelled in em:t’s house style – the actual instrumentation on the album was provided by Miasma and Bad Data, two em:t artists.
Cursed Legacy was the name of Cask J. Thomson's music project. project that was formed in 2008.
Give 'Em Enough Dope Volume One is a compilation album of music by various artists released in 1994 by British electronic label Wall of Sound as their first release. The idea for the album came when Wall of Sound's founder, Mark Jones, wanted to release a compilation of hard-to-find music by unsigned artists, with whom he had worked with via his distribution and pressing deals, so that the music could be heard by a wider audience. He picked his favourite such tracks which there was already an audience for and this became the compilation.
The Boxset is the 6-LP, 7-CD, 2-DVD compilation boxset by the Brazilian electronic musician Amon Tobin, released on 25 May 2012, on Ninja Tune. The Boxset includes Tobin's new music, along with his unreleased dubplates, earliest audio experiments, film and television scores, deleted bootlegs, remixes, cover versions and re-interpretations of Tobin's previous 2011 album ISAM, the ISAM live audio album and DVD, Tobin's remixes for other artists – as well as the recording of the November 2010 orchestrations of Tobin's music by The London Metropolitan Orchestra.
