Woody Island is an island and former settlement in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Woody Island had a population of 261 persons in 1921. [1] The community was largely resettled by a provincial government program in the 1960s, but a small population remained into the early 1990s. Many of the original buildings and houses are currently still on the island, including a stone house. [2]
The primary economic activity on Woody Island is the fishery. Fishermen harvest cod, crab, lobster, and scallops. [3] Other summer residents are employed is a tourism business, Woody Island Resort. [4] This business employees about 20 people on a seasonal basis, including musicians, cooks and general staff for the resort. The original old shop has now been turned into a small museum featuring many items owned by previous inhabitants of Woody Island.

Merasheen is a community located on the southwestern tip of Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It was one of the largest and most prosperous communities in Placentia Bay to be resettled, with the provincial government paying residents to abandon the community and relocate to designated growth centres during the 1960s.
Tack's Beach was a small community located on King Island in Placentia Bay. The population was 252 in 1921. The population had declined to 140 by 1966 due to a decline in fish stocks and the community was depopulated in 1967.
Garden Cove is a local service district and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is southeast of Swift Current. The residents of Sound Island moved without government assistance during a period around 1953. They moved to the mainland into Garden Cove and surrounding communities. Today Garden Cove has an active close community. There is a tour boat, Merasheen which is part of the Woody Island Resort hotel which gives people a Newfoundland outport experience. Garden Cove has hiking trails passing by Big Rock Hill and Placentiamans Point. There is an inshore fishery operating there. Some species caught are lobster, cod, mackerel, herring, crab, scallops, mussels, flounder and trout. Late in summer Tuna chase bill fish just off shore.
Gaultois is a small settlement in the Coast of Bays area in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Gaultois had a population of 100 people in the 2021 census. The town has a K-12 school called Victoria Academy, as well as a fire department, public library, Lion's Club, and town hall. The town is only accessible by ferry or helicopter. The provincial government ferry runs from the nearby town of Hermitage several times daily and the crossing takes approximately 20 minutes. This ferry also services the more remote community of McCallum once to twice daily with a crossing time of around one hour and fifteen minutes. In 2015, Gaultois voted against resettlement. Gaultois considered resettlement again in 2023 but it failed.
Red Harbour is a Canadian municipality of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located 20 kilometres northeast of Marystown.
Red Island is a former village about 12 miles northwest of Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada in Placentia Bay, on an island of the same name. It had five families in 1864, and had a population of approximately 350 in the 1945 census.1 The village of 283 was depopulated in October 1968, during the provincial government's Resettlement Program. In modern times, many people have cabins there and use it as a summer retreat. It recorded a 1986 population of 1, during an attempt to repopulate the island. This failed, however, when no teacher could be found for the proposed re-opened school.
Merasheen Island is an island in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. With a length of approximately 35 km and a width at its widest point of 9 km, it is situated about 6 km from Presque. It is the largest island in the Placentia Bay.
La Manche was a community on the east coast of the Avalon Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland between Cape Broyle and Tors Cove in a small inlet surrounded by steep hills. In French, la manche means "the sleeve". The area is named for the shape of the harbour, which is long and narrow with high sides. This harbour was probably first used by the French because of its seclusion which offered cover between raids on Ferryland and St. John's.
Oderin Island is an island in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador in western Placentia Bay, located about 30 km northeast of Marystown. Initially recorded as a fishing post of the French and later an outpost of the English, the island came to be inhabited at some time before 1704. The island no longer has any permanent residents due to a resettlement program in 1966.
English Harbour East is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on the northeast side of Fortune Bay. Settled first by the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland which used land on the "Neck" of the Harbour, they were joined in the early 1800s, by the English Dodge family and by Irishman Thomas Hynes Sr. European fishermen were first brought to the small community by English merchant family of Newman and Co. based in Harbour Breton, the firm of merchant John Gorman, and the Jersey firm of Nicholle and Co. The town had a population of 117 in the Canada 2021 Census.
Harbour Buffett was established in 1836. It was a small place with ten families in the St. Mary's area by 1864. The Way Station became a Post Office in 1891.
Kingwell was the former name of Mussel Harbor, a village located on Long Island in Placentia Bay. It had a population of 243 in 1940 and 198 in 1956.
Little Paradise was a small place in Placentia. It was depopulated on July 31, 1968.
Sop's Arm is a local service district and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The community was formed in the 1930s and 1940s by families moving from surrounding communities, including Jackson's Arm. In the 1950s and 1960s families from nearby Sop's Island moved to Sop's Arm, towing their houses across the channel of water.
Great Brule is a settlement on the northern tip of Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador. The first permanent residents in the community were recorded in 1813. The cod fishery was the primary source of employment in Great Brule. Between 1951 and 1956 the community was abandoned and most of the residents relocated to larger centers in Placentia Bay.
