The World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) is a global initiative whose aim is to ‘promote and facilitate innovation in healthcare delivery around the world. [1]

WISH was launched at the Global Health Policy Summit held in London on 1 August 2012. [2] The inaugural WISH Summit was held in Doha in December 2013. [2]

WISH is organized by Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and operates under the patronage of its co-founder and Chairperson, Moza bint Nasser. [3] Lord Darzi, the director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London, is Executive Chair of WISH. [3]

Background

Global Health Policy Summit 2012

The Global Health Policy Summit was held on 1 August 2012 at London’s Guildhall. [4] The event was organized jointly by Imperial College London and Qatar Foundation. [5]

Lord Darzi stated that the purpose of the event was to “create a network that will allow accelerated innovation and the adoption of technology, processes, and business models”. [6] He also noted the creation of an evidence base for healthcare innovation and best practice. [7]

More than 500 delegates attended, including health ministers, policy-makers, industry representatives, entrepreneurs, researchers, and non-governmental organizations. [7] Delegates discussed reports produced by expert working groups, or ‘Forums’, on six global health issues: primary care, digital innovation, aging societies, maternal health, non-communicable diseases, and innovative delivery models. [7] [8] UK Prime Minister David Cameron described the timing of the event as “significant” in his keynote address. [9] Moza bint Nasser announced that the Summit would continue on an annual basis as the World Innovation Summit for Health. [2]

World Innovation Summit for Health 2013

The inaugural WISH Summit was planned to be at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha on 10–11 December 2013. [2] More than 500 delegates were expected to attend [3] witn speakers to include Aung San Suu Kyi; Boris Johnson (who was then Mayor of London); John Dineen, President and CEO of GE Healthcare; and Sarah Brown, founding Chair of the Global Business Coalition for Education and co-founder of the A World at School initiative. [10] The global healthcare issues chosen for 2013 were: obesity, mental health, accountable care, end-of-life care, road traffic injury, patient engagement, antimicrobial resistance, and big data and healthcare. [11] [12] Participating countries were expected to implement any measures agreed in further reports published at the conclusion of the Summit. [13]

The Summit was also planned to feature the launch of a new ‘Global Innovation Diffusion Study’, which assesses and compares national healthcare systems’ contribution to global change. [3] The national healthcare systems to be assessed include those of Qatar, England, the United States, Brazil, India, Australia, Spain, and South Africa. [13] [14]

Education City is a development in Al Rayyan, Qatar. Developed by the Qatar Foundation, the 12 square kilometres (4.6 sq mi) property houses various educational facilities, including satellite campuses of eight international universities.

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Emir of Qatar

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is the Emir of Qatar. He is the fourth son of the previous Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa. He has been the ruler of Qatar since 2013 when his father abdicated the throne. Tamim had been the heir apparent since 2003 when his older brother Sheikh Jassim renounced his claim to the throne.

Qatar Country in the Middle East

World Innovation Summit for Education

The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) is an international initiative aimed at transforming education through innovation. WISE was established by Qatar Foundation in 2009 under the patronage of its chairperson, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser. With a biennial Summit held in Doha, and a range of year-round initiatives, WISE's mission revolves around promoting new approaches to education and investigating new ways to address pressing global education challenges.

Qatar is a multi-religious society like most of the Persian Gulf countries with waves of migration over the last 30 years. Muslims form 65.5% of the Qatari population, followed by Hindus at 15.4%, Christians at 14.2%, Buddhists at 3.3% and the rest 1.9% of the population follow other religions or are unaffiliated. Qatar is also home to numerous other religions mostly from the Middle East and Asia.

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is the sister of Qatar's ruling Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and daughter of the country's Father Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and former First Lady Moza bint Nasser. Al-Mayassa was declared the most influential person in art on Art+Auction's top-10 list and ArtReview's Power 100, and prominently appears on the Time 100, and Forbes' The World's 100 Most Powerful Women. She was listed in the 'Top 100 most powerful Arabs' from 2014 to 2017 and 2021 by Gulf Business. Al-Mayassa serves as Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and it was reported by Bloomberg that her annual acquisition budget on behalf of the organization is estimated at $1 billion.

Jassim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is the former heir apparent of Qatar. He is the third son of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the first child of the Emir with his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Missned.

Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a senior member of the House of Thani. He is the fifth son of former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the third child of the Emir with his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Missned. He is president of the Qatar Olympic Committee.

The World Health Summit is an international conference that has been held in Berlin every October since 2009. It has developed into one of the world's leading global health conferences. It was held for the first time on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Charité. 2,500 experts from around 100 countries from science, business, politics and civil society discussed the most important issues of global health care and made recommendations. The academic backbone of the event is the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies. From the very beginning, the World Health Summit has been under the patronage of the German Chancellor and the French President. Since 2013, the President of the European Commission has also taken over the annual patronage and since 2019, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) has also been a patron of the World Health Summit.

Qatar Museums Qatar government entity

Qatar Museums is a Qatari government entity that oversees the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, MIA Park, QM Gallery at Katara, ALRIWAQ DOHA Exhibition Space, the Al Zubarah World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, and archaeological projects throughout Qatar, as well as the development of future projects and museums that will highlight its collections across multiple areas of activity including Orientalist art, photography, sports, children's education, and wildlife conservation.

Qatar Charity

Once known as Qatar Charitable Society, Qatar Charity is a humanitarian and development non-governmental organization in the Middle East. It was founded in 1992 in response to the thousands of children who were made orphans by the Afghanistan war and while orphans still remain a priority cause in the organization's work with more than 150,000 sponsored orphans, it has now expanded its fields of action to include six humanitarian fields and seven development fields.

Qatar National Library Located in Education City

Qatar National Library (QNL) is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. The plans for the new national library were announced by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, on 19 November 2012, during a ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dar Al Kutub Library, in Doha, Qatar, one of the first public libraries in the Persian Gulf region, which had until then been regarded as the national library of Qatar.

The Institute of Global Health Innovation is one of Imperial College London’s global challenge Institutes. Established in 2010, its mission is to improve global health and care through evidence-based innovation. The Institute’s work aims to support the identification, development and implementation of healthcare innovation, with the goal of sustainably reducing inequalities in global health.
