QatarDebate, a member of Qatar Foundation and the National Debating Organisation for Qatar, is a civic engagement initiative which aims to develop and support the standard of open discussion and debate among students and youth in Qatar and the broader Arab world.

Contents

The centre focuses on using debate as a language learning tool to teach critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and civic awareness. [1] They have launched programmes in different educational institutions. These include the University of Chicago and the Qatar Police College. [2] [3]

History

QatarDebate was established in 2008 under the direction of Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation, [4] with support from the team behind the Doha Debates.

QatarDebate's aim is to "shape the global citizens of today and the intellectual leaders of tomorrow in Qatar and the region" through the introduction of a variety of English and Arabic debate programs. [5]

Programs and activities

The center selected and helped coach members of the Qatar National Debate Team for the 2008 and 2009 editions of the World Schools Debating Championships. In both editions, the team won four out of their eight debates. The team equaled Lithuania's record in the 2008 championships for the number of debates won by a team in its inaugural appearance. [6]

In April 2009, two national forums were simultaneously organized by QatarDebate: the Qatar National Schools Debating Championship and Qatar National Universities Debating Championships. [7]

QatarDebate was awarded the rights to host the 2010 World Schools Debating Championships, becoming the first Arab-based society to do so. The event was launched on 9 February 2010 and featured teams from 57 countries. [8]

A biennial event known as the International Universities Arabic Debating Championship is held under the auspices of QatarDebate. The first edition was held in 2011, followed by two more editions in 2013 and 2015. The championship features students from international universities who debate predetermined topics. The 2015 edition, which featured teams from 33 countries, was the first to include universities from non-Arabic countries. [9]

The 4th Qatar Universities Debate League (QUDL) in English was held in 2018, with 16 teams participating. [10]

In January 2019, the European Arabic Debating Championship took place in Vienna, Austria. The event, which was hosted by the QatarDebate Centre, was attended by 20 universities from 15 different European countries. [11]

The 3rd U.S. Universities Arabic Debating Championship was held in Doha in October 2022 and hosted 40 teams, with 16 coming from Universities that had not participated before. [12]

The second edition of the Asian Arabic Debating Championship was held in Muscat, Oman in February 2023. The Texas A&M University at Qatar team won the competition which had 165 participants making up 42 teams. [13]

The Al Jazeera Media Institute signed an agreement in May 2023 with the QatarDebate Centre to cooperate on providing services, which will develop young Arabs abilities to debate and criticise. The partnership also provides a learning opportunity for trainers of both institutes. [14] Also that month, the first International Conference on Debate and Dialogue was held in Doha. The QatarDebate Centre organized the event with additional support from the Qatar Foundation. [15] [16] In June 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the QatarDebate Centre and the University of Utah’s College of Humanities to promote the Arabic language in the U.S. [17] The 6th International Schools Debating Championship (ISDC) was held in September 2023 in the QatarDebate Centre. [18] In December 2023, the ‘Oasis of Dialogue’ series which is organized by the QatarDebate Centre and the Al Jazeer Media Institute, held the eighth session entitled “Human Rights Advocacy in Time of War”. Films

QatarDebate was involved in the filming of a documentary film on the first Qatar National Schools Debating Team (2008) entitled “Team Qatar”, directed by Liz Mermin, which won an award at the 2009 Doha Tribeca Film Festival. The center also produced an instructional film on debating for use by members of the society, entitled “QatarDebate Introduction to Debating”. [7]

Publications

In 2013, the center released a dictionary with Arabic and English debate terminology. Along with definitions of each term, the book highlights their application in debates by providing examples of their use. [20]

Other publications released by the center include Al Murshed Book [21] and the Introduction to the Art of Debating Book. [22]

The Qatar Football Association is the governing body of football in Qatar. The QFA was founded in 1960 and is based in Doha, Qatar. It became a member of FIFA in 1963 and of AFC in 1967. The Qatar Football Association organizes the main leagues of the Qatar football league system: Qatar Stars League, Qatari Second Division, including domestic cups: Qatar Cup, Emir of Qatar Cup, Sheikh Jassim Cup, Qatari Stars Cup and Qatar FA Cup. The association is also responsible for the men's, U-17, U-20, U-23, women's national teams and the local women's, youth and futsal football leagues.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Museum of Islamic Art, Doha</span> Museum in Doha, Ad-Dawhah, Qatar

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is a museum on one end of the seven-kilometer-long (4.3 mi) Corniche in Doha, Qatar. As per the architect I. M. Pei's specifications, the museum is built on an island off an artificial projecting peninsula near the traditional dhow harbor. A purpose-built park surrounds the edifice on the eastern and southern facades while two bridges connect the southern front facade of the property with the main peninsula that holds the park. The western and northern facades are marked by the harbor showcasing the Qatari seafaring past. In September 2017, Qatar Museums appointed Julia Gonnella as new director of MIA. In November 2022 the MIA became the first carbon-neutral certified museum in the Middle East Region. The museum participates in the Expo 2023 Doha from October 2023 until March 2024, with workshops and events focusing on biodiversity and sustainability.

DFI hosts two major film festivals, Ajyal Film Festival and Qumra, each year. Since its inception, DFI has financially supported more than 600 projects from development through post-production.

The Qatar Museums (QM) Public Art Department is responsible for overseeing the installation of artwork by renowned artists in the public realm in Qatar, creating an artist residency program for young local artists to help them develop their skills and horizons, organizing exhibitions featuring international artists and developing an online community of creative talent in Qatar and beyond. The QM has an ambitious plan that aims to make Qatar a world class cultural destination, notably in modern and contemporary art.

The National Museum of Qatar is a national museum in Doha, Qatar. The current building opened to the public on 28 March 2019, replacing the previous building which opened in 1975. The building was designed by architect Jean Nouvel who was inspired by the desert rose crystal, which can be found in Qatar. The museum site includes Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani's Palace, which is the heart of the Qatari national identity. As of 2013, the director of the museum is Sheikha Amna.

Wafika Sultan Al-Essa is a Qatari artist specializing in painting and plastic arts. She has occupied posts in Qatar TV's production department. She is one of the first females in the country to study and practice art professionally. She has been described as a pioneer of modern art in Qatar.

2023 International Horticultural Exposition or Expo 2023 is an International Horticultural Expo to be hosted by Doha, Qatar. The Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha is being held from October 2, 2023 until March 28, 2024. Spanning 1.7 million square meters, the event takes place in Al Bidda Park, one of the biggest parks in Doha which overlooks the Persian Gulf. Originally scheduled to be held from 14 October 2021 to 17 March 2022, but it was rescheduled to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) general assembly in Paris formally recognised it on 22 November 2018 as an International Horticultural Exhibition. The Expo will be organized under the theme "Green Desert, Better Environment". An 80-hectare (200-acre) site has been identified.

The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum is the first sports related museum in the Middle East. It focuses on the history of both domestic and international sports and officially opened to the public on 30 March 2022 through an inauguration ceremony held by Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The museum was designed by Spanish Architect Joan Sibina, measures 19,000 square meters and is connected to the Khalifa International Stadium. The museum is partners with the International Physical Literacy Association and Accessible Qatar. It received over 100,000 visitors in its first 8 months after opening.
