Freestyle wrestling was part of the 1990 Goodwill Games program. The freestyle wrestling tournament was a team championship (but the wrestlers won individual gold, silver and bronze medals) [1]

The Soviet Union (USSR) competed, for the last time before its dissolution, at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. 481 competitors, 319 men and 162 women, took part in 221 events in 27 sports. Athletes from 12 of the ex-Soviet republics would compete as the Unified Team at the 1992 Summer Olympics, and each nation would field independent teams in subsequent Games.
The Unified Team at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, was a joint team consisting of twelve of the fifteen former Soviet republics that chose to compete together; the states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania competed separately. The team has been informally called the Commonwealth of Independent States team, though Georgia was not yet a member of the CIS when it competed as part of the Unified Team. Selected athletes from the Baltic states also competed on the Unified Team. It competed under the IOC country code EUN. A total of 475 competitors, 310 men and 165 women, took part in 234 events in 27 sports.
Greece competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, USSR. Greek athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games. Of the five nations that have been to every Summer Games, Greece was the only one to compete under its national flag at Moscow, as the other five and several other nations competed under the Olympic flag in protest of the USSR's involvement in the Afghan Civil War.
Romania competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. 157 competitors, 103 men and 54 women, took part in 92 events in 11 sports.
Yugoslavia competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States which took place from 29 July to 12 August 1984. Yugoslav athletes had competed in every Summer Olympic Games since their official debut in 1920. The Yugoslav Olympic Committee (JOK) sent a delegation of 139 athletes, 105 men and 34 women, competing in 16 sports, down from 164 competitors in 1980. Due to the Soviet-led boycott, Yugoslavia was one of only three Communist countries to take part at the Games, along with China and Romania.
Randall Scott Lewis is an American wrestler and Olympic champion. He competed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he won the gold medal in freestyle wrestling in the featherweight class. In 1998, Lewis was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member.
The Men's Freestyle 68 kg at the 1988 Summer Olympics as part of the wrestling program, were held at the Sangmu Gymnasium, Seongnam.
Makharbek Khazbiyevich Khadartsev is a Soviet-Russian politician and former wrestler who later competed for Russia and Uzbekistan, two times Olympic champion and five times world champion in Freestyle wrestling. He was born in Suadag, Alagirsky District, North Ossetia.
Arsen Suleymanovich Fadzaev is a former Soviet wrestler, World champion and Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling. He also ran as a candidate for SRZP in the 2022 North Ossetia–Alania parliamentary election.
Jesús Eugenio Rodríguez Garzon is a retired male wrestler from Cuba, who competed in the freestyle competition during his career. He won a bronze medal at the 1995 Pan American Games for his native country, and competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. There he was eliminated in the first round after losses to Israel's Max Geller and Japan's eventual bronze medalist Kosei Akaishi.
Nikolay Ivanovich Paslar is an amateur Bulgarian freestyle wrestler, who competed in the men's middleweight category. Considered as one of Bulgaria's top freestyle wrestlers in his decade, Paslar has claimed two career medals in the 69 and 74-kg division at the World Championships, and later represented his nation Bulgaria at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Throughout his sporting career, Paslar trained full time as a member of the wrestling squad for Slavia Sports Club in Sofia under his personal coach Ilian Stefanov.
Erdenebatyn Bekhbayar is a Mongolian freestyle wrestler who competes in the 57 kg division. He won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and bronze medals at the 2015 and 2017 world championships. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where he was eliminated in the round of 32 by Adama Diatta.
Khaltmaagiin Battuul is a Mongolian wrestler. He competed in the men's freestyle 57 kg at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Remzi Musaoğlu is a wrestler from Bulgaria who has wrestled for both: Bulgaria and Turkey. He wrestled only in the bantamweight division (57 kg).
Arsen Karen Harutyunyan is an Armenian freestyle wrestler.
Vladimir Egorov is a Russian-born Macedonian freestyle wrestler of Yakut heritage. He won the gold medal in the 57 kg event at the 2022 European Wrestling Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. He represented North Macedonia at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
Nonoka Ozaki Japanese freestyle wrestler. She is a bronze medalist at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. She is a two-time gold medalist at the World Wrestling Championships and a two-time gold medalist at the Asian Wrestling Championships.
Zelimkhan Arsenovich Abakarov is a Russian-born Albanian wrestler. He is a gold medalist at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships. He is the first wrestler representing Albania to win a gold medal at the World Wrestling Championships. He is also a gold medalist at the 2022 Mediterranean Games and a silver medalist at the 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games.
