Wyandotte Terminal Railroad was incorporated in the State of Michigan, United States of America, on September 14, 1904. It ceased operations as a railroad in 1982. [1] [2]

History

Wyandotte Terminal Railroad was originally created and owned by Michigan Alkali, a producer of an ingredient in the making of soda ash and other sodium-based products, to provide railroad switching services to its two plants located about four miles from each other on the Detroit River in Wyandotte, Michigan, United States of America. Michigan Alkali was later named Wyandotte Chemical and eventually BASF Wyandotte Corporation. [3]

Operations

At one time owning almost 9 miles of track, Wyandotte Terminal Railroad did all the intra-plant and inter-plant railroad switching for BASF Wyandotte’s two large plants located on the Detroit River in Wyandotte, Michigan. The City of Wyandotte is located just south of the City of Detroit. Wyandotte Terminal Railroad interchanging freight cars with two Class 1 railroads, the Michigan Central Railroad (later known as New York Central, Penn Central Railroad and, eventually, Conrail) and the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad, as well as neighboring industrial railroad named Wyandotte Southern Railroad. During the last few years of operations, Wyandotte Terminal Railroad would operate a train six days a week from BASF Wyandotte Chemical’s South Plant to its North Plant. Leaving the South Plant, this train would run on about a mile of its own trackage to the Detroit Toledo & Ironton Railroad’s (“DT&I”) Ford Yard located at the extreme south end of the City of Wyandotte to interchange freight cars with DT&I and Wyandotte Southern Railroad. From Ford Yard the train would then run north approximately four miles with freight cars destined for the North Plant of BASF Wyandotte Corporation utilizing trackage rights on the DT&I line. Just west of the North Plant the train would regain Wyandotte Terminal Railroad trackage and proceed about a half-mile to the North Plant. When finished switching at the North Plant, this train would return to the South Plant via the same route, again interchanging freight cars received from the North Plant with DT&I at Ford Yard, if necessary. Wyandotte Terminal Railroad interchanged with Conrail at its North Plant. Wyandotte Terminal Railroad kept additional locomotives at each of its two plants to perform the intra-plant switching. Freight cars handled by the Wyandotte Terminal Railroad were largely tank cars and covered hoppers. [4]

Locomotives

In 1945, Wyandotte Terminal Railroad’s replaced its fleet of steam switcher-type locomotives with three Baldwin Locomotive model VO 660 diesel-electric switchers, nos. 101 through 103. It purchased a fourth new Baldwin switcher, model DS 4-4-660 no. 104, in January 1949. All were painted in a green with yellow striping paint scheme. At some point a fifth diesel locomotive switcher, a General Electric 65 –tonner, was obtained from its parent, Michigan Alkali. [5]

In 1975, Wyandotte Terminal purchased two used American Locomotive diesel-electric switcher-type locomotives to replace Baldwin switchers nos. 102 and 104 that were out of service. One of these was an ex-Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Alco model S-2 (numbered WTR 106) and the other was an ex-Nickel Plate Railroad Alco model S-4 (numbered WTR 107). Around this time Wyandotte Terminal Railroad began to repaint its locomotives in an orange with black striping paint scheme. [4]

Wyandotte Terminal Railroad’s Baldwin diesel-electric locomotives have all been scrapped except for no. 103, which is now in the collection of the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. [3]

The End of Wyandotte Terminal Railroad

Though BASF Wyandotte Corporation was still operating its two plants in the City of Wyandotte, Michigan, it decided to discontinue using the Wyandotte Terminal Railroad for its railroad switching needs in 1982 and, instead, entered into contracts with the two connecting Class 1 railroads, Conrail and Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad, for the switching of its two plants. [3] Wyandotte Terminal Railroad filed papers in the State of Michigan to legally dissolve its corporate existence on March 28, 1983. [1]

Its primary mainline between Chicago and Port Huron, Michigan serves as a connection between railroad interchanges in Chicago and rail lines in eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States. The railroad's extensive trackage in Detroit and across southern Michigan has made it an essential link for the automotive industry as a hauler of parts and automobiles from manufacturing plants.

Ann Arbor Railroad (1895–1976)

The Ann Arbor Railroad was an American railroad that operated between Toledo, Ohio, and Elberta and Frankfort, Michigan with train ferry operations across Lake Michigan. In 1967 it reported 572 million net ton-miles of revenue freight, including 107 million in "lake transfer service"; that total does not include the 39-mile subsidiary Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad.

Conrail Shared Assets Operations or CSAO is the commonly used name for modern-day Conrail. Conrail is an American railroad company. It operates three networks—the North Jersey, South Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit Shared Assets Areas, where it serves as a contract local carrier and switching company for its owners, CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. When most of the former Conrail's track was split between these two railroads, the three shared assets areas were kept separate to avoid giving one railroad an advantage in those areas. The company operates using its own employees and infrastructure, but owns no equipment outside MOW equipment.

Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Defunct railroad in Pennsylvania and Ohio

The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE), also known as the "Little Giant", was formed on May 11, 1875. Company headquarters were located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The line connected Pittsburgh in the east with Youngstown, Ohio at nearby Haselton, Ohio in the west and Connellsville, Pennsylvania to the east. It did not reach Lake Erie until the formation of Conrail in 1976. The P&LE was known as the "Little Giant" since the tonnage that it moved was out of proportion to its route mileage. While it operated around one tenth of one percent of the nation's railroad miles, it hauled around one percent of its tonnage. This was largely because the P&LE served the steel mills of the greater Pittsburgh area, which consumed and shipped vast amounts of materials. It was a specialized railroad deriving much of its revenue from coal, coke, iron ore, limestone, and steel. The eventual closure of the steel mills led to the end of the P&LE as an independent line in 1992.

Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad

The Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad is a short line railroad that operates in Livingston County and Monroe County in New York, United States. The railroad interchanges with CSX at Genesee Junction in Chili, New York, the Rochester and Southern Railroad (RSR) at Genesee Junction and the RSR's Brooks Avenue Yard in Gates, New York, and with the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum at Industry, New York. Their primary freight consists of food products - grains and corn syrup. In 1997, the Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad was selected as Short Line Railroad of the Year by industry trade journal Railway Age. The LAL is also the parent company for both the Bath and Hammondsport Railroad and Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad.

Michigan Central Railroad US railroad established 1846

The Michigan Central Railroad was originally incorporated in 1846 to establish rail service between Detroit, Michigan, and St. Joseph, Michigan. The railroad later operated in the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois in the United States and the province of Ontario in Canada. After about 1867 the railroad was controlled by the New York Central Railroad, which later became part of Penn Central and then Conrail. After the 1998 Conrail breakup, Norfolk Southern Railway now owns much of the former Michigan Central trackage.

Detroit and Mackinac Railway Railroad that formerly operated in Michigan, U.S.

The Detroit and Mackinac Railway, informally known as the "Turtle Line", was a railroad in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The railroad had its main offices and shops in Tawas City with its main line running from Bay City north to Cheboygan, and operated from 1894 to 1992.

The Detroit and Toledo Shore Line Railroad is a historic railroad that operated in northwestern Ohio and southeastern Michigan.

Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway

The Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway is a short line railroad that operates 247 miles (398 km) of track from Mapleton, Illinois, through Peoria across Illinois to Logansport, Indiana. TP&W has trackage rights between Galesburg, Illinois, and Peoria, between Logansport and Kokomo, Indiana, and between Reynolds, Indiana, and Lafayette, Indiana. TPW has connections with UP, BNSF, NS, CSXT, CN, CP, CERA, CIM, KBSR and T&P. The railroad is now owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. The railroad's traffic comes largely from agricultural products, including both raw and processed grain products, as well as chemicals and completed tractors. The TPW hauled around 26,000 carloads in 2008.

The Akron and Barberton Belt Railroad was a switching railroad that was built to serve various industries around the cities of Barberton and Akron in Ohio. The main purpose was to switch chemical cars for Pittsburgh Plate Glass, Babcox and Wilcox Companies as well as O.C. Barber's match works, all in Barberton. It was controlled by the Akron, Canton and Youngstown, Baltimore and Ohio, Pennsylvania and Erie railroads. It interchanged railroad cars with the Erie Railroad in Barberton, Pennsylvania RR in Barberton and Akron, Akron Canton & Youngstown at East Akron and Belt Junction west of Fairlawn and the Baltimore & Ohio RR in East Akron and Barberton. The railroad was always a freight-only carrier. The East Akron line ran south of Barberton before curving back north, passing through Kenmore, South Akron, East Akron and ending at the Akron Canton and Youngstown Railroad Brittian Yard in far Eastern Akron. The Fairlawn line ran due north from Barberton, connection with the Akron Canton and Youngstown Railroad at Belt Junction just west of Fairlawn. The three-track interchange yard at Belt Junction was out of service for many years during the 1920s and 1930s due to damage but was used by the Akron Canton and Youngstown Railroad to hold overflow cars from the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing plant just east of Copley. The interchange was restored around World War II.

Indiana Northeastern Railroad

The Indiana Northeastern Railroad is a Class III short line freight railroad operating on nearly 130 miles (210 km) in southern lower Michigan, northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. The Indiana Northeastern Railroad Company began operations in December 1992 and is an independent privately owned company. As of 2017 the railroad hauled more than 7,000 carloads per year. Commodities moved by the railroad include corn, soybeans, wheat and flour. It also handles plastics, fiberboard, aluminum, copper, coal, perlite, stone, lumber, glass, rendering products, as well as agricultural fertilizers and chemicals.

The Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal was a shortline railroad and marine terminal with its main facilities and administrative offices located on 86–88 Kent Avenue in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York City.

Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad Railway company in Wisconsin and Michigan

The Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad is a Class III shortline railroad that operates 347 miles (558 km) of track in Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Its main line runs 208 miles (335 km) from Rockland, Michigan, to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and it also owns various branch lines and out-of-service track. In 1897, the Escanaba River Company built a seven-mile (11 km) railroad from Wells, to tap a large hardwood timber stand at LaFave’s Hill. In 1898, the company name was changed to the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railway (E&LS).

The Saginaw Subdivision is a railroad line in the U.S. state of Michigan. The line runs 105 miles from Toledo, Ohio, to Saginaw, Michigan. CSX owns the line although since 2006, the section from Mt. Morris to Saginaw has been leased to the Lake State Railway but is still occasionally used by CSX. The Plymouth to Mt. Morris line was also leased to LSRC starting in March 2019.

Wabash Railroad American Class I railroad

The Wabash Railroad was a Class I railroad that operated in the mid-central United States. It served a large area, including track in the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Missouri and the province of Ontario. Its primary connections included Chicago, Illinois; Kansas City, Missouri; Detroit, Michigan; Buffalo, New York; St. Louis, Missouri; and Toledo, Ohio.

Detroit Terminal Railroad Company was incorporated in the State of Michigan, United States of America, on December 7, 1905, to own railroad track forming a semi-circle around the City of Detroit. It existed as a railroad until it was merged into its parent company, Consolidated Rail Corp., on May 31, 1984.

Port Huron & Detroit Railroad Company was incorporated on September 1, 1917, in the State of Michigan, United States of America, to own and operate 14 miles (23 km) of railroad track along the Saint Clair River from Port Huron, Michigan, to Marine City, Michigan. It remained in business until it was sold to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in December 1984. Most of its original trackage is still being operated today by CSX Transportation Co. with whom Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad merged into on September 2, 1987.
