Yaseen El-Demerdash is an American Paralympic swimmer. He will represent the United States at the 2024 Summer Paralympics.

Early life and education

El-Demerdash attended Blue Valley Southwest High School where was a high school All-American in the 100 breaststroke, was named the Kansas City Star Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2021 and, having skipped a grade, graduated high school at 17. [1] He currently is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Kansas. [2]

Career

On September 25, 2023, El-Demerdash was named to team USA's roster to compete at the 2023 Parapan American Games. [3] At the Parapan American Games he won a gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke, silver medals in 100 meter freestyle and 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 50 meter freestyle S10 event. [4]

On June 30, 2024, Wilkerson was named to team USA's roster to compete at the 2024 Summer Paralympics. [5]

Personal life

El-Demerdash was born to Dina Massoud and Aref El-Demerdash and has three siblings, Maraym, Yusuf and Adam. He was born with Poland syndrome, which stunted the development of his right hand and arm and left him without a right pectoral muscle. [6] [7]

McKenzie Coan is an American swimmer. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, she swam the 400m Freestyle in the S8 category. Coan was one of four S8 category swimmers chosen to compete for Team USA at the games. She later had her breakout games in the 2016 Summer Paralympics, where she would go on to win 3 gold medals in the category S7 50, 100, and 400M Freestyle races, with an additional silver medal in the 34-point women's 4 × 100 m Freestyle relay. In the process of getting her gold medal in the 50M Freestyle she also set a new Paralympic Record.

Hannah Elizabeth Aspden is an American Paralympic swimmer. She was the youngest swimmer on Team USA to medal at either the Olympics or Paralympics in 2016. During the 2019–20 season at Queens University of Charlotte, Aspden broke two American Paralympic Short Course Meters Swimming records in both the 100-Meter Backstroke and the 100-Meter Freestyle.

Colleen Young is an American swimmer. She won a bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games. She also won bronze medals in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke at the 2015 World Championships She competes in the Paralympic class S13. In 2016 she set a Pan-American record in the 100m breast.
