Yaseen El-Demerdash (born September 12, 2003) is an American Paralympic swimmer and American record holder. He represented the United States at the 2024 Summer Paralympics.
El-Demerdash attended Blue Valley Southwest High School, where he was named the Kansas City Star Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2021, The 2024 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Crawford Johnson Coca-Cola Scholar, and, having skipped a grade, graduated high school at 17. [2] [3] He then went on to becme an alumni of the University of Kansas, graduating with a bachelors in mechanical engineering in 2025. [4]
El-Demerdash began swimming competitively at a young age and initially competed exclusively in able-bodied swimming events, where he achieved 8 high school All-American honors and 6 school records, while discovering Paralympic swimming during his junior year of high school. [5]
Early in his Paralympic swimming career, El-Demerdash experienced classification challenges and was classed out of breaststroke and individual medley events prior to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. He continued training and competing internationally in alternative events. [6]
On September 25, 2023, El-Demerdash was named to Team USA's roster to compete at the 2023 Parapan American Games. [7] At the Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile, El-Demerdash won 4 medals. He earned a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, silver medals in 100-meter freestyle and 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle S10 event. [8]
On June 30, 2024, El-Demerdash was named to Team USA's roster to compete at the 2024 Summer Paralympics. [9] At the 2024 U.S. Paralympic Team Trials, El-Demerdash won gold in the 50-meter freestyle S10, silver in the 100-meter butterfly S10, and bronze in the 100-meter freestyle S10 across all classifications. On August 29, 2024, El-Demerdash made his Paralympic debut at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris. His first event was the men’s 50 m freestyle S10, which was contested on August 29th, 2024. In that event, he placed 9th overall. [11] [12] He next competed in the men’s 100 m freestyle S10 on September 1st, 2024, where he placed 10th overall. [13] [14] El-Demerdash also swam the butterfly leg in the mixed 4×100 m medley relay (34 pts) on September 2nd, 2024, where his team finished 6th overall. [15] On September 2nd, 2024, he competed in the men’s 100 m butterfly S10, finishing 14th overall. [16] El-Demerdash’s final individual event was the men’s 100 m backstroke S10 on 6 September 2024, where he finished 14th overall. [17]
El-Demerdash was born to Dina Massoud and Aref El-Demerdash and has three siblings, Maryam, Yusuf and Adam. He was born with Poland syndrome, which stunted the development of his right hand and arm and left him without a right pectoral muscle. [18] [19]
