Yevgenia Belorusets is a photographer and writer from Ukraine. [1] In 2020 she won the Haus der Kulturen der Welt International Literature Award. [2]

Biography

Belorusets is part of the curatorial group Hudrada and is co-founder of the journal Prostory. [3] She is known for her reportage with Der Spiegel and Isolarii.

Belorusets has been reporting on her experiences of being in Kyiv during the military attacks from Russia in 2022. [4] In an interview with Deutsche Welle, she described how she wanted "to keep writing, keep telling stories. And do what I can do, here and now. I can't really plan anything in this situation." [5]

On 28 February 2022, four days after it was invaded by Russia, Ukraine applied for membership of the European Union (EU). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested immediate admission under a "new special procedure", and the presidents of eight EU states called for an accelerated accession process. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen stated that she supports Ukrainian accession, but that the process would take time. On 10 March 2022, the Council of the European Union asked the commission for its opinion on the application. On 8 April 2022, von der Leyen presented Zelenskyy with a legislative questionnaire, which Ukraine responded to on 9 May.

<i>Modern Animal</i> 2021 book by Yevgenia Belorusets

Modern Animal is a 2021 novel by Yevgenia Belorusets. Belorusets connects a series of different characters and ideas, making use of a Soviet-style lecture form. While writing the novel, Belorusets interviewed people along the Donbas region, approaching the Russian-Ukrainian conflict through stories about animals. ISOLARII co-founder Sebastian Clark described the work “as a great refutation of autofiction.” The book was published with a foreword by filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Writing for magCulture, Danielle Mustarde notes how over the course of the novel the "once-structured Modern Animal evolves into a dream-like mix of interview, folklore and fiction."

The Ghost of Kyiv is the nickname given to a mythical MiG-29 Fulcrum flying ace credited with shooting down six Russian planes over Kyiv during the Kyiv offensive on 24 February 2022. Various reports, including the Security Service of Ukraine, made similar claims. The Ghost of Kyiv has been credited as a morale booster for Ukrainians and as a narrative for Ukraine's success during the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Wandel durch Handel, also known as Wandel durch Annäherung, is a term referring to a political and economic notion, mostly associated with German foreign policy, of increasing trade with authoritarian regimes in an effort to induce political change. Although most strongly associated with Germany, similar policies have been pursued by several Western countries.

Olena Olehivna Shevchenko is a Ukrainian women's and LGBT rights activist. After working as a teacher, she co-founded the NGO Insight in 2007 to advocate for LGBT inclusiveness on feminist platforms. She started annual events including Women's Day March, Transgender Day of Remembrance and the Festival of Equality, to protest against discrimination against women and the LGBT community in Ukraine and in other former Soviet countries. Her opponents have repeatedly attacked her and her events.

Daria Meshcheriakova is a Ukrainian sports and political journalist. Born in Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, she was educated at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the University of Jena. She lived in Kyiv, working for Segodnya and other outlets, before the Russian invasion in 2022. She continued to work after she took refuge in Kosovo. At the 2023 French Open, she engaged tennis player Aryna Sabalenka in a pair of exchanges about the invasion, leading the player to skip her next couple of press conferences.
