Yonah Jeremy Bob is an author and Israeli-based journalist who has worked at The Jerusalem Post since 2012 and currently serves as senior military correspondent, intelligence analyst and Literary Editor. [1] He frequently lectures in Israel and the United States on security, spy wars, diplomacy and politics. [2] [3] His latest book, Target Tehran was released in September 2023 and deals with Israel's response to the Iranian nuclear program. [4] The book was named one of the Top Five Books in Politics for 2023 by the Wall Street journal, and won the Jewish Book Council Natan Award for 2023. [5] [6] A review in the Wall Street Journal by John Bolton said the book was "replete with anti-Iran cyber-warfare and sabotage successes." [7]

Bob was raised in Baltimore [8] and graduated cum laude from Columbia University and Boston University Law School. [9] He previously worked for the Israeli Foreign Ministry and Israeli Military International Law Division and the Israeli Justice Ministry. [10]

Journalism and Public Speaking Career

Bob was the first to interview former Mossad director Yossi Cohen in English in October 2021. [11] [12] He moderated a panel at Reichman University in which former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon and other top defense officials participated. [13] He moderated a panel at Reichman University in which two former Mossad chiefs, Shabtai Shavit and Efrayim Halevy, as well as former IDF intelligence chief Aharon Zeevi Farkash participated. In 2018, he was the first to report that the Israeli Attorney-General would indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for bribery, several months before the first formal announcement. [15] He was subsequently interviewed in-depth about the story.

From July 2020 to January 2023, Bob broke a series of exclusives and first publications about sensational attacks on Iran's nuclear program which most attributed to the Mossad. [16] [17] [18] [19] During the war in Israel that began in October, 2023, Yonah was embedded with Israeli forces in Gaza three times: at Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza, at Yahya Sinwar's house in Khan Yunis and at Rafah, the Philadelphi Corridor and the Kerem Shalom and Rafah Crossings. [20] During this time period he also authored several op-eds in the Wall Street Journal.

Target Tehran, his book co-authored with Ilan Evyatar, was released a month before the outbreak of the 2023 war between Israel and Gaza, and reviews have noted the link between Hamas and Iran. [21] [22] Target Tehran was translated to Hebrew and published by Yediot Books in April 2024. [23] The paperback edition of Target Tehran is due to be published in September 2024, with a new Afterword addressing the post October 7, 2023 world. [24]

Bob was interviewed about the war and his book to media outlets such as NBC Morning Joe, KTEP, [25] BizTalk Radio, [26] at a Hudson Institute seminar, [27] the Reichman University World Counter-Terror Summit, was scholar in residence at Jewish Center in Manhattan, [28] and was interviewed for the 2023 Detroit Jewish Book Fair. [29] He has been a guest lecturer at the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston and at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, both in October 2023. [30] [31] He and Evyatar presented the book to Israeli President Isaac Herzog upon its release.[ citation needed ]. He has interviewed many times about the 2023-2024 Middle East War, including on BBC News [32] and FOX News, [33] and has done well over 100 TV and radio interviews over his journalistic career.

Military action against Iran is a controversial topic in Israel and the United States. Proponents of a strike against Iran point to the threat presented by Iran's nuclear program as a casus belli. Many Israelis, and particularly hardline politicians such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, American neoconservatives, Iranian dissidents support military action to stop the program or go further to overthrow the regime. Opposition to military action is often based in pacifism, but some who are opposed to military action against Iran are opposed for other reasons.

Cyberwarfare is a part of the Iranian government's "soft war" military strategy. Being both a victim and wager of cyberwarfare, Iran is considered an emerging military power in the field. Since November 2010, an organization called "The Cyber Defense Command" has been operating in Iran under the supervision of the country's "Passive Civil Defense Organization" which is itself a subdivision of the Joint Staff of Iranian Armed Forces.

Between 2010 and 2020, five Iranian nuclear scientists were killed in foreign-linked assassinations. Rezaeinejad was shot dead by gunmen on motorcycles, while Shahriari and Ahmadi Roshan were killed by explosives attached to their cars. Fereydoon Abbasi was also targeted in a car bombing, but survived.

AMAD Project is an Iranian scientific project, started in 1989 and stopped in 2003 according to IAEA, that is suspected by Israel to have nonetheless continued, with the aim of developing nuclear weapons. Iran have denied the existence of any program aimed at the development of a nuclear explosive device, and in particular denied the existence of the AMAD Plan when reporting additional details to IAEA in 2015.

<i>Tehran</i> (TV series) Israeli espionage thriller television series

Tehran is an Israeli spy thriller television series created by Moshe Zonder for the Israeli public channel Kan 11. Written by Zonder and Omri Shenhar and directed by Daniel Syrkin, the series premiered in Israel on 22 June 2020 and 25 September internationally on Apple TV+.

The 2022 Istanbul terror plot was a terror plot uncovered by Mossad and the National Intelligence Organization. The plot consisted of an Iranian-led terror cell which planned to kidnap, murder, and assault Israeli tourists in Istanbul. Israel had given advisories against travelling to Turkey on 30 May and upgraded the advisory on 13 June, amid threats made by Iran. Israel later told its citizens in Turkey to lock their doors after a couple had to be transported following a tip of an Iranian terror cell waiting to kidnap them. Several suspects were arrested on 14 June in Istanbul, while the arrests were made public the 23 of June.

On 31 January 2018, fewer than two dozen Israeli Mossad agents infiltrated a secret warehouse in southern Tehran, Iran, and pilfered 100,000 documents, including paper records and computer files, documenting the nuclear weapons work of Iran's AMAD Project between 1999 and 2003. The trove was part of Iran's clandestine nuclear archive, and documented years of work on atomic weapons, warhead designs and production plans.
