The YouX Students Representatives Council (YouX SRC), formerly the Adelaide University Union Students' Representatives Council (AUU SRC), is the student representative body at University of Adelaide. Until a restructure in 2007, the students' representative council had been named Students' Association of the University of Adelaide (SAUA).

YouX SRC is one of two governing bodies of YouX, the other being the YouX Board. [1]

History

The Students' Association of the University of Adelaide (SAUA) was a student representative body that existed at the University of Adelaide from 1973 until 2007. [2] It was one of a number of student organisations that was affiliated to and funded by the Adelaide University Union through the government sanctioned 'Union Fee'. Prior to 1973, an SRC had represented student interests at the University. [3] Former Presidents of the SRC include John Bannon, Gordon Bilney and Julia Gillard.

The SAUA had representative members on many of the University's committees, gave comment in the media and made submissions to government inquiries about issues that affected students and young people in general. [4] It also regularly ran events and awareness campaigns.

The SAUA held annual elections to elect students to its various office-bearer positions as well as positions on the governing council. Notable past Presidents include Natasha Stott Despoja, Sarah Hanson-Young, Stephen Mullighan and Christopher Pyne as Vice-President. Other notable past members include Anne McEwen, Andrew Southcott, Peter Malinauskas, David Penberthy and Annabel Crabb.

Due to the introduction of voluntary student unionism by the Howard government, the Adelaide University Union underwent a significant restructure and the SAUA was replaced by an SRC in 2007. [5]

The 2021 student election saw victory of the United Left, a left coalition, with Ana Obradovic elected as the 2022 SRC president. [6] [7]

The AUU was renamed to YouX in 2022, despite significant opposition to the change. [8] In 2022, the YouX Board under Oscar Ong cut funding to the SRC. The majority of the SRC voted on a motion denouncing the funding cut in their first meeting. [9]

After a disputed result in September 2023, [10] 2023 president Georgia Thomas remained as interim [11] until a by-election was held in March 2024. Aiden Zeyang Wang was elected president on 28 March 2024. [12]

Student Media was not a committee but included annually elected editors – On Dit : Adelaide University Student Newspaper + Student Radio (Broadcast on Radio Adelaide).

On Dit is a student newspaper published fortnightly during semester time, funded by the Adelaide University Union and advertising. Founded in 1932, it is the third oldest student newspaper in Australia along with Semper Floreat, which was first published in the same year. The paper replaced the Varsity Ragge which ran from 1928 to 1931, ending because of what On Dit described in its first edition as 'student apathy'. The Varsity Ragge returned in 1934 for a single edition as a rival to On Dit.

It provides academic advocacy, welfare, and counselling services to students free of charge, funds the student newspaper On Dit, and owns a number of commercial operations on campus. It also oversees the Student Representative Council (SRC), an organisationally separate body responsible for student political representation.

Union Hall was a theatre, hall and lecture theatre located on the North Terrace campus of the University of Adelaide, in South Australia. Constructed in 1958, Union Hall served as a performance venue for various festivals and productions until 2007. It was demolished in November 2010 to make way for a new science precinct.

The La Trobe Student Union (LTSU) is a representative body for students at La Trobe University. The LTSU is located at the Bundoora campus in the upper Agora. The LTSU is made up of elected student representatives who provide advocacy, services, events and support for La Trobe Students. The representatives include President, Education Vice President, General Secretary, Postgraduate Officer, Education Public Affairs Officer, Welfare Officer, Women's Officer, Queer Officer, People of Colour Officer, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Officer, Disabilities Officer, Social Justice Officer, Activities Officer and 7 General Members of Council.

Sibongiseni Ngcobo is a South African politician who has been a Member of Parliament (MP) in the National Assembly since May 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he was the youngest Member of the National Assembly at the time of his election to Parliament. Ngcobo served as a DA councillor in the Richmond Local Municipality from 2016 to 2019.

Baxolile Babongile Nodada is a South African politician for the Democratic Alliance who has been a Member of Parliament since 2019, and the Shadow Minister of Basic Education and the Parliamentary Counsellor to the Leader of the Opposition in John Steenhuisen's Shadow Cabinet since 2020.

Empire Times is the student newspaper of the Flinders University, in Adelaide, Australia. It has been published by the Flinders University Student Association since 1969, ceased publication in 2006 as a result of voluntary student unionism, however resumed in 2013 with the reintroduction of SSAF.
