ZHAW School of Management and Law (SML) is a department of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). It is located in the city of Winterthur (canton of Zurich, Switzerland), near the main railway station. The SML is accredited, among others, by AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA ("Triple Crown"). [2] [3] [4]
The university was founded in 1968 [5] under the name Höhere Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungsschule (HWV) as an educational institute for business and administration, offering scientifically based education and training for business professionals. Initially, the only program offered was a degree in business administration (Diplom-Betriebsökonom). [5] [6] The institution relocated to Winterthur in 1996 and was renamed Zürcher Höhere Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungsschule (HWV) Winterthur. [7] In 1998, the HWV merged with Technikum Winterthur to form the Department of Business and Management, also known as School of Management, at the Zurich University of Winterthur (ZHW). [8] [9] The School of Management became one of eight departments of the newly established Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in 2007. The following year, the department was renamed School of Management and Law (SML). [9] In 2024, the SML was the department of the ZHAW with the highest number of students. [10]
As of 2025, around 9,000 students were enrolled in undergraduate and continuing education programs at the SML. [1] The degree programs can be completed either full-time or part-time alongside employment. [11] [1]
The SML has 194 partner universities in 50 countries (as of 2025). The revenue of 12.7 million Swiss francs was generated from third-party sources (38%) and public funding agencies (62%). [1]
The SML offers the following bachelor's degree programs:
It also offers the following master's degree programs:
The main building of the SML is the Volkart Building, which was inaugurated in 1928 in the city center of Winterthur. Designed by architect Robert Rittmeyer, the building initially served as the trading house of the Volkart Brothers and, since the mid-1990s, has been used by the Zürcher Höhere Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungsschule and its successor institution, the SML. [13] Since 2019, the SML has been occupying seven floors of the Red Tower in Winterthur. [14]
The SML is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), [2] [15] and has also received the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) quality label [3] as well as the AMBA accreditation ("Triple Crown"). [4] As of 2024, some degree programs and continuing education offerings are featured in Financial Times rankings, notably in its listing of the best European business schools. [16] [17] [18]
Teaching and research is administered in topics such as economics, law, management, and public administration. The school conducts both applied fundamental research and projects in collaboration with practice partners. Sources of funding include the Swiss National Science Foundation, Innosuisse, EU research institutions, and industry partners. As of 2023, a total of 85 research projects were underway according to the ZHAW. [1]
The SML publishes studies on a range of topics — for example, in 2017 on the future of the banking sector in Switzerland, [25] in 2019 on the political influence of cities compared to rural areas, [26] and in 2025 on the role of mobile payment. [27]
