In 1989, Rubaiya Sayeed, the daughter of the then Indian Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, was kidnapped by Kashmiri separatist militants in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The kidnappers demanded the release of five jailed members of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in exchange for Sayeed's release. The Indian government headed by V. P. Singh of the Janata Dal party, with outside support from the BJP, agreed to the demands and induced the state government to release the jailed militants. In 2004, the JKLF admitted to having carried out the kidnapping, and the court case is ongoing. In July 2022, Rubaiya identified Yasin Malik, one of the key leaders of JKLF at that time, as one of her kidnappers.

Parvez Ghulam Rasool Zargar is an Indian cricketer who plays as an all-rounder for Jammu and Kashmir. A right-hand batsman and offbreak bowler, Rasool is the captain of the Jammu and Kashmir team and a regular member of India A. He was bought for ₹95 lakh (US$110,000) by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2014 IPL auction. Rasool was the second cricketer after Mithun Manhas from Jammu and Kashmir to have played in The IPL and the first from the state to play for the Indian National Team in ODI's and T20I's. He played only 1 T20I and 1 ODI in his international career.
Imtiaz Ahmed was an Indian cricketer who played several matches for Jammu and Kashmir during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Imtiaz made his first-class debut in October 1996, against Punjab in the 1996–97 edition of the Ranji Trophy. A lower-order batsman, he played a further match in the following season's tournament, and also a single List A match in the limited-overs Ranji One-Day Trophy. Imtiaz did not play any further matches for Jammu and Kashmir until the 2002–03 season, which were to be his final two at first-class level. He finished his career with 101 runs from four matches at first-class level, with his highest score an innings of 40 runs against Madhya Pradesh in December 2002.
Chadoora is a town and a Municipal committee in Budgam district in Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Famous sofi and aa'lim Mir Shams-ud-Din Araqi is buried here. Shubham Khajuria is an Indian cricketer who plays for Jammu and Kashmir cricket team. He is a right-handed opening batsman. He played for the India Under-19 cricket team in 2013, becoming only the second cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to do so. In 2023, he played in great Manchester cricket league for Westhoughton cricket club as their pro scoring 745 runs in 11 league & cup games which included four centuries and two half centuries with an average of 93.13 including a double hundred (212) in his first match and a 37 ball 100 as well breaking the club record.

The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2009. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

He became the third cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to be picked in the Indian Premier League. At 17 years and 353 days, he became the youngest player to make their debut for the Mumbai Indians. However, in June 2019, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) banned him for two years following a discrepancy with his birth certificate.
Abdul Samad is an Indian cricketer who plays for Jammu & Kashmir in domestic cricket and for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is a right-handed batsman and right-arm leg-break bowler.
The Kashmir Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league organized by Pakistan Cricket Board in Azad Kashmir. The league was founded in 2021. It consists of seven franchises; six teams representing major cities in Kashmir, while one team is representing the Kashmiri diaspora. Each team plays the group stage matches in a single round-robin tournament with the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs and ultimately for the final. Matches played in the Kashmir Premier League do not have official T20 status.
